MossBerg Newbee Needs Advice

Hello all,

Last week I treated myself to a new toy:The 590. I am new to shotgunning- some friends took me out skeet shooting and I had such a good time....an impulse purchase was in the works. Any how- I would like to get into some 3-gun competitions (I do IPSC and IDPA pistol already) and would like to know what ammo works best for practice, steel matches, and skeet. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,
I will not be any help, but I have asked a similar question here as far as the competition part goes, but I didn't get any answers either.:( So don't feel like your just being ignored.

I can only speak to trap and skeet, not the other forms of shotgun competition.

The best ammo for trap is typically 1-1/8 oz. of no. 7-1/2 or 8 shot. For skeet, it's typically 1-1/8 oz. of no. 8 or 9 shot. Larger shot than these is not permitted under the rules.

For both, either 2-3/4 dram equivalent or 3 dram eq. Obviously, the lower dram eq. will give slower speed but only slightly so, particularly downrange, and obviously, the lower the speed, the lower the recoil. And I don't think that higher speed is allowed under the rules.

Some experienced shooters will use 1 oz. or even 7/8 oz. loads, but I don't know if they are readily available as commercial ammo.

Many clay sports fields (trap, skeet, sporting clays) will not allow anything other than these target loads to be used even if you're not competing (noise and safety issues). If you want to become adept at the clay sports, then you probably should start with these target loads anyway.

Welcome to the club.
