Mossberg Model 500 Mariner 9 shot hunting barrel

Yeah, I think the title says it all.

I recently got myself a Mossberg 500 Mariner the 9 round model for home defense I love the gun, it handles and shoots great. This is my ONLY shotgun, and my first. I was talked into taking it trap shooting the other day and I had a great time. This got me to thinking "hey, I'd like to go hunting sometime" Well, the problem is the shotgun I have has a completely open barrel - not that great for pheasant/quail/etc... So I figured I would go look for a Mossberg 500 barrel with a modified choke, perhaps a 24" barrel or so.

The problem is, none of the ones Mossberg offers are for those of us with the 9 shot model. I've been searching the internet high and low to find one and it just doesn't seem to be out there. So here I am, asking if anyone here knows of a manufacturer who makes such a barrel, or even someone (gunsmith) who would hack the ring off a regular Mossberg barrel and weld it a few inches down to accommodate my magazine??

I've also considered swapping out a smaller magazine on the shotgun, but I have a feeling that would be a difficult (pay a gunsmith?) procedure as well. Any thoughts, ideas suggestions?

I know, I should just go out and buy a proper hunting shotgun, an over and under Benelli. Problem is, I'm pretty broke - a few hundred for the barrel is even pushing it.

Why go through all that trouble when you can go and buy a Mossberg 500 with a 28" barrle on it for $200 - $250. Plus I didn't catch what state you are from, but in Kentucky your shotgun must have a plug in it to only allow 3+1. (3 Shells in magaziine, 1 in Chamber). So having a 9 round magazine would do no good either. (At least in Kentucky)

At that price, I got the shotgun and 3 choke tubes as well. Just my .02...

it's 3 shots here in Colorado as well. (actually, I think it's 1 in the chamber 2 in the magazine here) But that raises a good point. I'll scrounge around the threads here and find out what people like in the way of a decent inexpensive bird hunting gun. thanks!

The problems not the barrel, it's the magazine tube. Most barrels are for 5 shot magazines, you would have to change both. The magazine twists off and it's easy to switch both, but the problem is cost. If you search ebay, pawn shops, etc you can find new/used parts at reasonable prices, but paying more than $150.00 you might as well purchase a 2nd shotgun.
