Looking at Bud's at inexpensive 12ga. shotguns for home defense, pump with short barrel. don't plan on doing alot of shooting except for break-in period. Any opions on this shotgun would really be appreciated. Thanks.

They work great. Only difference, that I'm aware of, between a Maverick and a regular Mosberg 500 is the cross bolt safety.

This Maverick?

....or their non-bullpup version?

Most parts (including barrels and chokes) are interchangeable between Mossberg 500s and Maverick 88s.

Aside from the different safeties, a few other parts are simplified, and the Maverick may use one part where the Mossberg uses two to do the same job. (This is similar to what Savage did with their Axis rifles to reduce costs).

Also, 500s and 88s are both assembled in the US, but some parts for the 88 are made in Mexico.

I had one for a long time. They work great. I killed a lot of hog and small game with mine. To be honest tho, I would look around at pawn shops and what not to find a used 870...I traded my maverick for one and couldnt be happier. And I believe he is talking about the Maverick 88.

I use my Walmart $177 Maverick 88 for lots of trap shooting with its 26 in. barrel attached. When it's home, it sits under my bed with an 18 in. barrel. I really like mine, and you can't beat the price.

Basically the same gun as the 500, built in the same plant (Eagle Pass, TX.), using 95% the exact same parts. Different safety arrangement as has been mentioned, and different forearm attachment method. Virtually everything else is identical. Cheaper than the 500 because fewer options are offered.

maverick 88 is a good inexpensive shotgun
some were made in mexico though seems they have switched production back to the good ole USoA

Thanks for all the input. I will be checking these out closer now and I believe I'll go take a look at the pawn shops. Thanks again.

Rather than order it, check WallyWorld. They normally carry the 88's for far cheaper than you can get it anywhere else - especially a pawn shop.

mavericks from pawn shop may have broken pump handle or missing parts. I got a M88 from a pawn shop online for less than 100 the barrel and mag tube were beat but cleaned up nice. it was missing the ejector which was a easy fix.

some old Mossberg 500's at auction and pawn shops may be single arm pump handles which dont cycle as smoothly. dont think maverick made single arm pump handles but something to watch for.

I just bought one this weekend from Dick's Sporting Goods. Got the 18 inch Security model with a five shot tube. From what I can tell, its quite a lot of gun for the $179.95 that I paid for it. It'll be sitting in the closet for the most part. Bought it to serve as a HD gun.

The mag tube is fixed. Is there a way to clean the inside of it? To ward off corrosion, I would like to run a silicone cloth through it every now and then.

I also own the Maverick 88 security model with the 18.5 inch barrel. I've had mine for a few years and I have no complaints. It seems to like just about any factory loads I've run through it. Heck, I've even taken it bird hunting. Now it is strictly a HD gun since I've acquired an 870 Wingmaster and Browning A-5 since then. They are hard to beat for the money.
