I was in my local Big 5 sporting good store and saw a Mossberg "Home Security" model short barrel pump shotgun with 8 shot capacity for only $209 brand new. I am very interested in getting it. Does anybody know about it and how good it is? I would like to get one with a changeable barrel length but man, this gun looks nice and comfy. I almost bought it, but decided that my first firearm should be a handgun so I got the handgun instead. I figure the wifey wouldn't be able to take the recoil. Anybody heard of this model? It simply said Mossberg Home security. Is it a good, reliable gun? Should I go back and get it? I've also seen a nice Maverick Pump Shottie that's almost identical to the Mossy, but I heard that they are a step down in quality. Thanks for input

Welcome to TFL, Lo-khem. The Mossberg 500 series are fine guns.

FYI, there is a button with search on it. You can select the forem, term to be located and title or body of thread.

I just did this and loacted 249 threads. :D

Lots of good info out there.

I bought my mossberg from big 5, and it works just fine.

the actual model name is the 500 persuader, and the magazine only holds seven rounds.

It's a fine shotgun, and i prefer it to the 870 or the defender, but i'm left handed, which makes the 870 and defender safeties awkward.

I've got one

I added a folding stock, so its REALLY compact...but even as it comes its real handy...The only shotguns I've ever owned were Mossberg 500s...Never had a problem with any of 'em, period

I got one too

I am very pleased with my Persuader with the extended magazine.

You can get a 28" barrel as well for it. It's about $113 for the barrel.

I have been enjoying it. I use the longer barrel for trap shooting.

Mossies are good guns, $209's a good price. Your were right about the wife, a shotgun's not the best choice for non shotgunners, and the kick can scare people.

Suggestion, get good instruction and some practice before depending on any weapon...

HTH...

Don't assume your wife cannot handle the recoil of a 12ga. Lots of petite women do very well with them. Start off with a very light load until she gets form right, and gets used to it. Then move up.

IIRC, the Mossy is a heavier shotgun, which reduces felt recoil.

Do you know how to tell a light load from a heavy load? (Hint, it has to do with the weight of the shot and the "drams equiv" of powder.) If not, ask away.

mavericks have a different safety location, but that's about it.

Has this always been the case? I seem to recall working on Maverick for someone a few years ago, and I cant' recall. But I believe it was located on top just like the Mossys.
