Mossberg Ejection Problem

I have a Mossberg Maverick 88 pump that I was shooting this weekend, and had a problem with empty shells getting stuck in the ejection port.

I was shooting some 3" Hevi-steel BB loads. As the empty shell is pulled out of the barrel, the open folds of the shell don't quite clear the ejection port so the ejector cant fling it out the side.

I tried several other brands of 3" shells, as well as some 2 3/4" shells without any problems. The only odd think I noticed about the shells was when I compared the overall length of the empty 3" BB shell to an empty 3" #2 shell, the BB shell was slightly longer (by about 1/8").

Has anyone else seen this?

I don't know anything about the Hevi-Shot quality. Are they any good? Or should I stick with Federal (or other) brand?

By the way, I HIGHLY recommend the Knoxx Comp Stock for the Mossberg!

Are the shells the same length as other brands when unfired? Could be they have more crimp length in the design. Does a hard shucking of the pump clear or does it make any difference?

I just put a Knoxx on my 500 and haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Yes, the unfired shells seem to be the same length. It is only the fired shells that show the difference in length.

No, the shell cant be ejected by trying harder. The open end of the empty shell still extends 1/16 - 1/8" into the bore when the bolt is all the way back.

I plan to avoid those Hevi-Steel loads in the future!

Or get a shotgun that can take 3.5 shells. Sounds like they made them for either 3.5 inch receivers or for break open guns. Avoidance sounds best.

How often do you clean it

a couple friend were having the same problem with the verona auto and they had to replace the mag tube plug, it seems that sometime the cleaners swell the plastic. A cheap way to try this is glue a washer on the bottom of the mag plug that pushes the shell into the chamber. One of the verona had a cheap metal one and the owner couldn't see anything but he put the new one in after he cleaned the tube and it worked fine. Let me know how you come out on this. Just 02 cents worth

Winchester #6 shot, same problem

I don't know what it is about this particualr shell. Cleaning seems to have nothing to do with it. But this shell plus my Mossberg 500 = Jam-o-matic.
It's the only shell that does this.

Comparison of the length = same 1/8 difference.
