mossberg conversion

I own a mossberg 500 (5-shot magazine tube). I want to convert the gun to a 590 ( 8-shot tube). Are the mag tubes interchangable? I know that a new barrel needed but I think thats it. Also, anybody know where to find that part. I've been looking around but had no real luck.

Seems that the general consensus is that you cannot extend the magazine of hte 500 due to the design of the gun.

I also searched the internet and cannot find any extensions for your gun.

As I understand your question yes the parts are interchangeable, but it is WAY more trouble than it's worth. The truth is you can find the 8 shot model for LESS than the cost of a new barrel and mag tube. I picked up a MINT 500 8 shot with extras for $225. I've seen lesser guns go for $175 and less. The cheapest was $125 for a worn finish beater, it worked 100%.

You can extend the capacity of Mossberg shotguns but you need to swap out the barrel along with replacing the mag tube due to the way the barrel is attached. I've done this on one of my 500s. Didn't use a 590 barrel though, used a Mossberg 500 8-shot barrel. Mossberg and/or Hastings made an 8-shot barrel. Don't know if they are still being made, neither lists them on their respective websites. It's a simple swap, takes only minutes to remove barrel, add mag extension and replace with new barrel.

Funny you asked this...I just did that to my Mossy 500 Persauder this week...well at least I got all the parts.

Here's what I did...

Start with a Persuader that I had been using for a long time

Get an 8-round barrel from Havlin Sales (click on the Accessory/Barrels link)

It will sort of look like this but with the M4 collasping stock, and sidesaddles

I'm having a local smith braze on the front sight...while he is doing that, I'm using Aluma-Hyde II from Brownells to hardcoat the reciever.

Can it be done? Sure.

Is it worth the trouble/expense? Maybe, only you can decide.

Do a little shopping first. A few years ago, I picked up a previously purchased but unfired Mossberg 500 20" 8-shot for $200. I would imagine converting your existing gun would cost at least that much. If you can find a similar deal, you can still keep the 500 you already have.

I'd second the folks that say they can find a cheap 8-shot Mossy. Certainly would be cheaper than the route I've taken THe thing is , I never seemed to be able to do that. Always seemed to find those deals after they were done.

My plan is to find a cheap standard Mossy and take it back to the config that my Persuader was. Seems to be a lot more examples in the Plain Jane config than the tactical config for cheap.
