Mossberg Combo Package

Didn't Mossberg use to offer a package of a pump 12 or 20 guage with standard stock and pistol grip? I think I use to see it on their website, but do not see it now. Seems like it had a 20 in barrel. Would be a good purchase for someone on a tight budget, would offer good HD and be some use for hunting.
 
I bought a similar combo pack, but instead of two stocks (standard and pistol grip) it had two barrels...18 1/2 and 28" vent rib (modified choke).

I would MUCH prefer a 2nd barrel to a pistol grip, which I personally have no used for. Especially when you can simply tuck the stock under your arm if you want to aim/shoot from the hip, or quickly raise to your should for greatly increased aim and stability to withstand the recoil for faster follow up shots.

I would also recommend 12 gauge since you will have a much wider range of loads to choose from, such as "reduced recoil", if needed. And 12ga ammo is more widely available and at a lower cost.

I love the 500 combo and would buy it again without thought. (Compared to the Rem 870, both the location of the safety and slide release are both enough reason to go with the 500, for me. The lower cost of the 500 compared to the 870 just sweetens the dear further.)

If you have any inclination that you may hunt with your new shotgun...regardless of the game (with different loads you can hunt, bird, rabbit, deer and larger, all with this shotgun) , then I would highly recommend going with a combo that includes a shorter barrel for home defense and also a longer barrel for bird, or even clays.

Or, if you see a combo that includes a barrel between 22-24" that has rifle sights on it, I would definitely recommend that too, since that will increase your accuracy/capabilities when hunting.

I have a Mossberg 500 blued-n-wood combo from Dick's that includes a 28" interchangable choke field barrel, 24" rifled bore sabot slug barrel w/ cantilever mount, 2 cheekpiece inserts, and a crappy 2.5 x 20 scope for $249 (after sales price and rebate)

the crappy scope was replaced with a Bushnell Banner 2 -7 x 36 scope for $80 and I added a 'pseudo' security barrel for $50 (an older C-Select Mossberg 500 poly-choke barrel cut to 18.5" with muzzle rounded, bead sight installed, and sling stud installed;

a good all-around package!!!
 
Unkie Ben, That 22-24 inch with sights has to be smooth bore or it is really useless with anything but $abot $lugs...:D

The 28 acc-choke threaded barrel and short HD barrel with traditional stock would be my only choice in a combo unless I hit the lottery and could afford them fancy slugs.

I could not agree more hotdogs. I prefer a smooth bore, for the sake of versatility, so that you can carry various types of loads and shoot them all out of the same gun/barrel. (birdshot, buckshot, and rifled slugs)
 
I bought a mossberg 500 back in Dec. It was the combo with both the 18 1/2" barrel and the 28" vented barrel. Along with three chokes. It had the normal stock on it, but also came with the pistol grip ( which I haven't used) They're out there, you just have to find them. I bought this one brand new for $350 at a local farm and home store!!
 
Just this week:

Mossberg 20ga--26" VR barrel--3 chokes and wrench + a 24" fully rifled and ported slug barrel--Williams sights. All for $249+tax----thats what I call value for the buck--esp considering the AR barrel alone I'm looking at goes for more than that.
 
Mossberg makes a good 12ga pump under the brand of Maverick 88. I have one and it seems to be a great defensive gun. It comes with a choice of mounts. Either by pistol grip or with shoulder mount, all synthetic.
I've had all kinds of Mossbergs even the bolt action 12 and .410 gun I love em' all.
 
I just looked up the Maverick on their website. Only thing I don't like is it has a trigger safety. To me, thumb safeties are far superior. Good habits make it easy to always thumb it off and on as needed. Trigger safety takes more concentrated effort.

ncpatriot, I'm with you on the safety. For many folks, it's their preference for the type of safety that's the deciding point when selecting between the M-500 and the R-870.
 
Thanks Zippy. It's partly me knowing my own shortcomings. If something takes more effort, I'm likely to forget it. With the thumb safety, it can stay on til I get it to my shoulder and I off it again when lowering it. Trigger safety is much more awkward. The one thing I don't like about my Marlin 60 .22.

I have Mossbergs 930 combo with rifled deer barrel and upland barrel. It is great.
 
just to throw more support behind it, like uncle ben, I bought that same exact combo and LOVE it. Still a wise choice IMHO
 
Big 5 Sporting Goods is having one of their periodic sales on Mossberg shotguns this week.

I purchased the 28" vent-rib/18 1/2" Security barrel 12 guage combo for $289.99. This is not a model you'll find in the Mossberg catalogue, but it is a 500 and labeled as such. It has the capacity for 5+1. I was all set to buy a Winchester SXP but this price swayed me. This Big 5 combo differs from the standard Field/Security combo in several ways, I believe:

  • The 28" barrel is not threaded for accu-safe chokes; instead, it has a fixed Modified choke
  • The stock is synthetic rather than wood
  • The Big 5 combo has no action slide tube but rather the bars are pinned to the forearm itself

Big 5 is also selling Mossberg Security shotguns (8 round capacity) for the same $289.99 price.
