Mossberg 930

Has anyone seen the Mossberg 930 semiautomatic shotgun? It is listed on their website, but my local dealer says they are not available.
 
I've got a few of them, they've been ot for about 4 years now.

They are the best autoloader that Mossberg has ever made and they are easily the best semi-auto, for the money, on the market today.

The only reason that a dealer would say they're not available is because they are usually trying to sell something else.... The 930's a very popular and don't stay on shelves for very long.

Was there a particular model you're looking at??

I bought one off Gunbroker back in December of last year. Excellent shotgun and I put all kinds of shot through it including slugs. I believe it is the best shotgun in its class for the money.
 
Getting the itch bad for one of these... bobbed off to 20" and fitted with a mag extensions & screw-in chokes, it could almost replace my old 870 Special Purpose.

The ones I have handled are very light and quick in the hands.
 
Hmmm. Interesting. My local dealer is a friend, simply because I buy tons of firearms from him,, and he makes every effort to get me exactly what I want, so I know he's not trying to sell me something else. However, when you guys tell me they are around, I gotta wonder. Anyway, as to the model, I want the 18.5" with full length magazine, and pistol grip.

I'm also glad to hear they are so well received. I really want one. I was going to jump on the Benelli M4, I think that's the model, that is a combination pump/semi-auto, but something about that set-up doesn't feel right to me. Not to mention the $1500.00 price tag, when the Mossberg can be had for about 1/3rd the price and is arguably just as good if not better.
 
How would you rate it versus the Rem 11-87. I ask cause I have a Mossberg 500 pump with a lot of chokes and I might switch to semi auto, if the Mossberg 930 is a good choice then I can use all the 500 chokes (or so I've been told).
 
Thanks for the links. That's probably the way I'll have to go if I want one, which I do. I'll let you guys know what I think of it.
 
Fit & Finish on the Mossberg aren't going to compare to the Benelli.... but it's $800 less in price, too....

Function-wise the Mossberg will do the same thing the Benelli will, you'll have a lot more money to practice with, & you won't stress out when your getting scratches on the Mossberg.....

As far as chokes.... The 18.5" barrels aren't tapped for chokes, CYL bore only... The other 930 barrels use the same chokes as the 500, though.
 
I'm only interested in the 18.5" one. Strictly home defense, so it'll spend most of its time collecting dust, anyway. All the more reason not to have a $1500 dust collector.

I bought mine for right at $650 last May as a present to myself.

Shotgun World has several threads about it as does Weapons Evolution

General consensus seems to be that there are/were a few made with either canted front sights or sights that are too low in front and that the buttstock is just a bit too long as it comes from the factory.
 
I traded my 11-87 for one.
I am quite happy although i have not had it out that much. It is a little bulkier than the 11-87, but lighter. There are some parts that are not steel, but they all seem to be quality polymers or alloys.
I was using my 11-87 for sporting clays and pheasant hunts and it just wasn't reliable after about 250 rounds, which isn't all that much when you are talking about clays. Haven't had the 930 out for clays yet, so i can't tell you much about that.
 
Thanks for the links, 4thpointofContact. Good information. Overall, it looks like an excellent weapon, especially for the price. I have another question: Is the pistol grip a great improvement over the standard stock?

In my opinion..... NO...

The pistol grip version makes getting to the tang mounted thumb safety difficult.

There are larger safeties that can be added to make it easier, but a safety that is difficult to use ....... doesn't get used.... For a strictly HD / security gun that might not be an issue for you but if I'm moving and climbing over, around, or under things I like to use that safety.... just in case...

And..... (OK, I'll throw it out there.....) The Choate pistol grip (similar to the Speedfeed pistol grip) are just plain UGLY!! :eek:
 
Makes sense, Smitty. I'll get one without the pistol grip. I do like to use the safety. Makes me feel, well, safer.
 
Thanks about the Remington 11-87. Really surprised you had trouble after 250 rounds- that's only a couple of months of sporting clays at best.
 
I'm glad I found this thread. I asked my dealer about semi-auto 12's this afternoon and he pointed me right to the 930. He quoted me $445 for the base model gun with an 18.5" barrel. Now I'm lusting over that even more than the Mauser based .308 that I've been dreaming about.
