mossberg 930 spx review

Picked up the 930 a few days before Christmas and thought I'd share with you all my thoughts on it..

Got it at Dicks for 585 plus tax, which seemed fair, saw it at a local shop for 699. Having read several forums and reviews I knew what to look for. The front sight on this one had the spacer under it and its straight. Took it home and cleaned all the crap out of it.

The first few rounds were bird shot, just to see what would happen. I had a few fte's. Switched to 00 Buck, a couple boxes of Remington's slugs and it ran sweet! After that it ate the cheap target shot no problem. However it would not cycle a reduced noise and recoil round, but that's no big deal.

I think overall its a fun gun, it may replace the 500 as a HD gun, by it needs a few more range sessions. The only nit-picky things I could come up with....no from sling mount, has a rear but zero up front. The stock is slightly too long, maybe for a small shooter and the recoil spring will limit the aftermarket stock options...but I'm 6'2 so that's moot for me. I'd give it a solid 4.5 out of 5. I didn't provide pics cause its box stock. I plan to keep this thing real simple, a sling and maybe a shell carrier at the most. I'll update this in a few days as I plan on some more range time.

Bought the same gun at about the same time. Looked it over and wiped it down a bit w/ Break Free but have not had the time to shoot it yet. My sights are fine also. Finish it very good, the forearm does not move about as I had read earlier. When I get my 870 back from being coated then will shoot both a bit . Hoping that the Federal #4 reduced load tactical does ok in the SPX but then again it cycled in my M1 when I had that so probably will be OK. Overall seems like a very solid gun.

YEah, I got one as well. I like it so far.

Two issues:

1. The bolt and slide had rust on them from Dick's - the slide was actually pitted. I plan to ask Mossberg to replace them both.

2. Several FTE with the Winchester cheapo short base bird shot.

I will try some other ammo and see what gives.

Very nice shot gun, soft shooting and great LPA sights.

Probably a Nordic Extension tube to get me up to legal Multi-gun loadout and a clamp to keep it in place and then a fun-gunning we will go.

Had mine about 2 years, and yes it's fun times at the range. Besides that, it has been extremely reliable. I probably have 500-600 rounds through it and maybe had 2 FTFs. That was probably more about the magazine spring than anything else.

When I want to get a bit silly, I'll mount the TLR-2 on the top rail. I have to say that if I were a BG and heard that bolt slam shut then saw the laser, I'd be OTD in a hurry....

I've since changed out the sling for a Blueforce Vickers Tactical...

Ditto on the barrel clamp, i plan to get the nordic setup as shown in the review posted here somewhere. Then mount a TLR-1 w/ remote switch on the clamp. I get my 870 back today, had it coated in moly resin ( from john norrel coatings). If it looks good enough will probably do the SPX next. These are nice guns, worth the bucks i believe.

Had a very ejection/chambering issue show up yesterday. Using Remington's 00 Buck every now and then it would eject two rounds....meaning gun was working fine, fired round was ejected, new round chambered, than all of a sudden it would some how either eject the new round or it was falling out of the bottom of the magazine..but I don't see that happening. It would happen really fast and couldn't really see where it came from. Just empty chamber and new round on the ground. It did it with the slugs also. Not ammo specific . Ideas?

Tumbleweed...... chamber is empty. Bolt is closed. It might have been the second round, but I don't think so. The live round is found on the ground.

Finally shot my 930 SPX today. Not much, had a little time so rode out to my uncles farm. Ran 7 quick rounds thru it, 3 # 4 buck followed by 4 #4 reduced load tactical by Federal. Shot in rapid sequence all fired just fine and put the empties in a neat pile about 8 ft to my right at the 2 oclock position. Will do much more later but as someone said before its a soft shooting gun.
