Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag

Just here to kinda brag, but my dad gave me an Ulti-mag, chambered for 3.5 inch mags for my graduation gift. Synthetic stock, 26 inch overbored barrel with gas ports. Ran four boxes of shells through it including some 3 inch 00 buck, and I love it. Ran down to wally world, walmart, and bought a box of 7.5 shot skeet load Federals a clay thrower and a box of clays. Wouldnt you know it, its gonna rain this weekend. :( Anyone out there have experience with mossies like the 835 ulti? Any comments or stories would be apreciated. I am thinking duck hunting this fall with some 3.5 inch mags to really throw that steel shot out there. :)

I have had one of the shotguns for years..In fact the 835 was my 1st pump shotgun. I still have it and still use it every year for small game. I have been very pleased with its performance over the years. I have yet to have ANY malfunctions with this shotgun and it makes a great turkey gun especially since you can use 3.5 in mag shells. I do believe it is not the best in the world in terms of using it for quail and doves but it makes a great small game/turkey gun and with the slug barrel, makes for an effective white tail gun at relatively close range.
Great gun!:D

Congrats on the shotgun, it's a good'un,even if it's not an 870(G).

Before getting into those 3.5s,practice a lot with light loads and good form. Flinches are much easier to build than eliminate, trust me on that.

A few rounds a month of any of the clay games will help you immensely in the hunting field. Use a low mount and wear your hunting clothes.

Yup. I've got an 835 Ulti and its a good gun. I prefer it over the 870 for one reason--the location of the safety. Its right under your thumb, where it's supposed to be. Very easy to operate.

I had a touch of trouble with mine cycling properly, but only when using 3" mag buckshot, and when the gun was new. The recoil on that stuff is brutal, and I have no intention of using it in the future. Just had to try it.

Other than that, its been a pleasure to shoot. You'll enjoy it.

I purchased a 835 about a month ago. That day I was able to run one box of target loads into it. I liked it, made my shoulder a little sore...
Good luck with yours...

The 835 is a darn solid piece, they are tough. Recoil with the 3.5 steel is pretty darn stiff, but 3.5" turkey loads are downright brutal. First time I lit one off my teeth clacked, I smelled blood, heard some garbage in my neck popping etc. I was not prepared for the difference between it and a 3" 12, or a 10ga for that matter. I shot about 10 more on the pattern board and after I was prepared the recoil was not nearly as bad, down to "hurtful" LOL. When you go to the pattern board with the roman candle shells in you pocket you will wish it weighed what a 10 does:eek: .

You will really like the 3.5" steel, I think it is head and shoulders above 3" for a couple reasons. 1) you can use larger pellets and still maintain pattern densities suitable for ducks at extended ranges. You can throw a pattern that will kill ducks GYD at 50 yards with pellets big enough to do the job at that range, I have yet to be able to do that with 3" shells and I have tried all of the shells and 15+ chokes. 2) pressures the 3.5" can be loaded to enable shotshell makers to give those large pellets some extra ooomph, 1 3/8 ounce at 1500 is my current load. Speed kills with steel, period. Hit the pattern board with a couple different shells, find the one that you like and then order up a case. The Wichester Supreme and Kent Fasteel have thrown great patterns for me. Take a couple buddies with you to pattern though, 3.5" guns have a tendency to shoot a couple feet low after you shoot 25-30 patterns by yourself:eek: so spread the "love" between a couple guys.

Get out and shoot that sucker till it is a part of you, then the ducks will fall like never before!!

Had a problem with mine. It would not eject fired shells. Would cycle unfired shells fine but when they opened after firing(3 1/2" Winchester) they wouldnt clear the ejection port. I sent it back to Mossberg and it came back working fine. I have since bought the rifled barrel and put a Burris scope with it. Besides geese it has taken two nice Illinois Bucks. One pictured elsewhere on this forum.

I've owned a Mossy 835 for about 8yrs...haven't hunted with it yet, its seen its share of time at the trap/skeet range though. I fired it today for the first time in awhile at trap and my scores dropped...rusty at shooting it. It gets shot twice a week between 3 to 4 boxes a day...by my friend. He keeps hintin' to me that he wants to buy it...but even though its a back-up gun...I would never sale it. I'll be switching back to it prior to Hunting Season though.

On a side note : The same friend went to Wally World to look at the 835 they have...and said its feel and balance was nothing like mine. He said it felt more like a youth model...with the Lenght of Pull being shorter. Anyone with an older 835 notice this ? Need to go to Wally World to see for myself...

In my limited experience with it, it's a good gun. I've fired exactly 1 shot in one. My younger brother has one, and I borrowed it to shoot a turkey. I shot it with 3 1/2" #5 load at 6 yards. Quite an impressive hole, I must say. My brother killed 2 turkeys with it this year, one at about 65 yards. The gun patterns very well.
