Mossberg 590A1..

Hello folks! Since its a new year I decided to add a shotgun in my HD tools so I picked this NIB Mossberg 590A1, I am not familiar with shotguns even though I have owned a benelli 12gauge before so this year I shal spend time shooting this shotgun to get use to it and get comfortable shooting it for this will be my primary HD gun from now on. Tried it today as you can see on the video, recoil is not that bad ( I'm not a fun of recoil),got some good pattern at a distance of 8 to 10yds. I also tried shooting some HD loads and gotta say slugs is not my favorite thing to shoot in this shotgun:eek: but 00 buck shot is just fine..here it is and me shooting it..

constantine federal premium 3in buckshots with 15 pellets, I', still trying to decide if I should get the winchester load it look nasty! its just $15 dollars for a box of 10! its a HD load that surely will leave a mark..
 
Lol yeah man. They'll feel that in the morning. I really want to try shooting out the different kinds. I'm also a bit hesitant about the pistol grip. Never shot a pistol grip shotgun before. :/

3", 15 pellet 00 qualifies as OVERKILL. And if fired from a PGO shotgun, it may overkill your desire to shoot it again.

Do try some really light loads first before uncorking the Howitzer rounds.

Trust me......
 
Sorry Dave, elaborate a little more. My knowledge is lacking in the shotgun department unfortunately. I really want to learn more.

Try setting some clays up at 100yds and use 1oz. slugs. The 590 is surprisingly accurate and fun to shoot, given you're not running 3" shoulder killers

i got a Remington 870 police magnum & love shooting the slugs out of it.
if your looking to push your 590 to 100yrds then your going to have to use the slugs.

buckshot is a great load but more for short range.

also, you might want to invest in a good ghost ring sight or rifle sights.


i've got the rifle sights on my 870 barrel and believe you me 50yrds with these bad boys with sum good Remington 12g 2 3/4 slugs is a walk in the park

I replaced my Ghost Ring Sights on the 590 A1 with a plain bead and then a three-dot sighted barrel -- either are better for a shotgun shooter.

For some shotgun shooters, perhaps. Definitely not for all, though. As with any sighting system, some approaches will work better for some shooters than others. I like ghost rings, and they work well for me, I also use rifle sights and bead sights on other shotguns. But for me, for a dedicated defensive/large game shotgun, ghost rings are hard to beat.
 
In the real world, 15 pellet 00 does little more than 8 pellet 00 besides building a flinch and slowing up following shots.

Besides,usually the longer shells mean one less round in the mag.

And there's that recoil thing too. A standard 9 pellet load of 00 has enough kick to be unpleasant for most folks. All else equal, a 15 pellet load packs another 70% of wallop.

And I'm big, tough and habituated to recoil, but I'd decline having to shoot a 15 pellet load from a PGO except under extreme conditions of risk.
 
Those xs sights look mighty fancy hope they go well for you. I felt at ease with the stock Remington rifle sights, the rear being adjustable is a plus for me.

I do agree though everyone has a system that works well for them but
For shotguns I feel rifle sights have a good distance away from my field of view that are still pretty dead on.

The ghost rings (now this is just for me) feel like they are to in my face
For this type of long gun. On my A/R I prefer the rear sight that close to my
Eye when shooting. On shotguns not so much.
 
And the ghost ring sights with the chunky parts and ears significantly constrain your visibility in the target area -- they are not for fast target acquisition (compared to a bead or three dots).
 
i agree, but with 3dots i feel like there is to much going on in the rear of the sight for the shotgun.

don't get me wrong Ive shot with ghost ring sights & they are pretty cool
but what works well for me for faster target acquisition is the rifle sights set up.

three dots (in my opinion) belong on semi auto's at best. Ive recently switched my rear sight on my glock to the warren tactical battle rear sight
talk about a nice fast target acquisition set up :cool:

I have a red dot on my 870 and the mount has a 'see through' mount. The mount works as a sort of peep sight with the front dot should the red dot crap out on me. I like the set up and I find using either the red dot or back up sighting system faster than just a bead. But, everyone is different so use what works for you...
 
My mossy got some exercise today! took it out for some skeet shooting! yah i know :D I'm in the line with the guys and i'm holding a Tactical shotgun with 8 shells compared to their 4! man it was a lot of fun..
