Mossberg 590A1 Model#51518

I just purchased a Mossberg 590A1 Model#51518. My main question is, it's an 18.5in. heavy barrel with 5+1, apparently it cannot take a magazine tube extension, it's blocked? Its has a screw on cap at the end, but when you look inside the tube, there is just a much smaller hole in diameter compared to the diameter of the tube, I imagine so it can still be cleaned at the very least. I do live in CA, and we do have stringent laws, but I don't think it's because of this. The other problem with this specific model is the mounting of the Tac light, I've looked at 1in. universal mounts and side saddle mounts. There just not enough space for the universal mounts and I'm not to keen on the side saddle, for it gives away your silhouette, as a last resort I will use it. I'm also looking at the Surefire 323LM weapon light, but it's expensive! As far as the universal mount, I could try the VangComp +1, not to add capacity, but to have the extra space to put the universal 1in. mount on and some 1in. tactical light, possibly the TacStar T6. Does anyone have a work around for this specific model problem? Ideally I would like to change the tube, so I COULD put a mag extension tube, at the very least I would like to put the tactical light at the end of my shotgun. Thanks!

Yeah, that's the one. So, I guess this is a CA law gun restriction? The salesmen did say this particular mil spec model was illegal here up until 2007. It came NIB and everything, and the store does have a good reputation. It does seem like a lot owners are putting tube extensions on their 590A1, but not on this particular model #51518. I've only found 1 thread where someone was talking about how it's blocked and they had this model. I'm still very pleased with it, it's a great shotgun! I guess I'll have to research more and contact Mossberg about this.

You're not talking about the inner spring retainer, are you? My 590 (as well as my A1) has that. Send us a pic- I'm assuming it's like mine, where you can unscrew it with a flat-blade screwdriver, they should be readily removable for heavy cleaning and maintenance, and the like. I saw Vang Comp has a mag tube extension, but I'm curious as well how they overcome that retainer, unless the spring is long enough and the top of their extension has the same threads.

**EDIT** Here, I took a pic of my 590A1 5+1. Yours look like this when you take the barrel nut off?

Unless yours is different, you unscrew that inner retainer with a flathead, and you can install a mag extension, as far as I know. **EDIT**

Hey- sorry for the late reply, I went out of town for a bit. So, it turns out the guy who sold it to me, was incorrect, I knew he was, he seemed so sure though. I called Mossberg and checked it myself, it's as you said it was, it totally comes out! I thought it was another silly CA law, ugh! Brighter side, I was able to get a hold of MAX100, he makes custom +2 tube mag extensions, I'm getting one, now I can attach a barrel mount for a tactical light from http://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/shotgunaccessories.html It's specifically made for the heavy barrel 590A1 18.5in., which I have. It's good to know there are people out there who have the same model. I'll be posting pics of upgrades and reviews on it, and I'm very excited just to go out and shoot the darn thing! Thanks again for your help! Keith

When you pry the spring retainer out be careful not to bend the lip of the mag tube and the spring will fly out with force.

I have seen some pretty neat shotgun light mounts for this gun, but I think i'm going to save up and get the SureFire fore end, but a mag tube extension might be in order as well. I bet even a 1" mag tube will allow you to fit one more round, there's just *barely* not enough room to fit a 6th round. My old 590, when you put that 8th round in it, it felt pretty tight anyway, so I don't think spring binding would be a problem...

Hole in end of cap is for assembly and dis-assembly. No flying spring or kinking of spring when assembling. Take off cleaning rod tip. Insert cleaning rod thru hole. Unscrew cap. You'll still need to be careful because of the spring tension. Than remove cap, rod & spring for cleaning.
