Looking at this gun. Mossberg 590A1

What kind of accuracy would be attainable with slugs at

50 yards?

75 yards?

100 yards?

Thanks!

Also considering the Remington 870 Police shotgun

In my case accuracy was much less than expected. I could not adjust the rear sight enough to zero. I sold the gun off and told the buyer it did not shoot as intended. I backed that up by finding articles in gun test magazines where they claimed the sight were dubious at best.

I have shot smooth bore slug guns and my recollection is that they will reliably stay on a 12" plate at 50 yards. I did shoot at 100 yards but I forget.

The 12 GA slug guns recoil so hard, I stopped shooting from the bench. It is extremely painful to shoot these things in any position but standing.

I have a slug barrel on my Mossberg, I was able to adjust the barrel to point of impact at least at 50 yards. And if you plan to hit anything with buck or slugs, the sights are the best way to go about this.

I bought a half-dozen 20" 590-A1's for a little Sheriff's Dept., 20 years ago, and spent an afternoon zeroing them at 50 yards with 2 3/4" Super X slugs.

Any one of them was minute-of-coffee-cup at 50 yards from the bench.

Mine is the thinner 20" (not an A1) barrel 9-shot model 590.

These were not my final adjustments on the sights they were shooting a little right (I was switching brands). I have found with a smoothbore, the slug makes a big defference. I had some slugs of a different brand shoot fine at 50 yards but the wad would seperate at 100 yards and they would produce flyers of about 24 inches.

I am really satisfied with the Fiocchi slugs, they are easy on the shoulder and accurate enough.

I put 3-shots touching, 50yards (Fiocchi) with a Mossberg 500 18-1/2" security bbl and bead sight a few days ago.

Brenneke has this to say on their web site:

"Smoothbores sing with Brenneke, with four different cartridges available in three different gauges. Superior sectional density and ballistic coefficients produce exceptional power. Five-shot groups of under two inches at 60 yards are not uncommon, and the retained energy of our magnum loads make them true 100 yard slugs."

I like the "minute of coffee cup" standard mentioned above.

I prefer the aperture (ghost ring) sights to open sights myself, but YMMV. Either is a good choice IMHO.

How accurate the gun is with slugs is almost certain to have more to do with the shooter than the gun :D. Getting paper plate hits at 100 yards with slugs should be easily doable. Keep in mind that different guns like some brands of slugs better than others. I've had good luck in a bunch of different smoothbore shotguns with Brenneke KO slugs, and as a bonus they tend to be relatively inexpensive. Some testing might be in order, but do it from a standing rest rather than trying to bench it like a rifle, unless you use a cheater bag or a Lead Sled.

Have fun and Stay Safe,

lpl
