Mossberg 590A1 14 inch

Gentleman,

I have an opportunity to acquire a 14 inch mossberg 590A1 with bead sight and speedfeed stock. Part number 51686. It is in mint condition. In Canada you can have a 14 inch shotgun with no problems. I was going to set it up as a home defense/ tactical gun. I already own a 870 express combo and ordered a Benelli M1 Tactical.

Question is should I mount a flashlight on the gun? Add Ghostring sights? or just keep it clean. Also most importantly is the gun worth the effort or should I save my money and get a Scattergun Professional later on? I can get the 590A1 for about $500 USD. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Jeff

I like the KISS theory (keep it super simple). I'd go stock. Got a 590A1 (18" with bead). $500USD is definitely too much in the US. It's more of $300 - $340 gun in the US.

Thanks for the replies. I am still torn on what to do. Right now with all the export restrictions it takes forever to get stuff from the US so I might be better off getting the Mossberg and setting it up. From what I have read most people are happy with the 590A1 from Mossberg. Any additional feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Jeff

I picked up a 590A1 20" (with that neato bayo lug) for about $375 new from my local gun shop. You can pick up a Surefire 623 weapons light for it (20" w/ bayo lug requires the 623A01 which you have to order direct from Surefire so it's about $130 more expensive) which will replace the forend grip and give you one hell of a light, or if you don't feel like spending $220 you can pick up one of those el-cheapo Maglight mounts... I can't vouch how well a Maglight well hold up from shotgun vibrations though.

Keep in mind that the 590A1 has an unusual amount of kick to it, especially when shooting slugs. Even Federal Tactical slugs (low recoil) will put a dent in your shoulder over time, so pick up a recoil pad... Pachmyr makes a good one.

Jeff:

I hate to be a party pooper, but you better take another look at Canadian gun laws. To the best of my knowledge, overall length and barrels length for shotguns is now pretty much the same as in the US. 660mm oal (26") and 457mm barrel length (18").

I know that Canadians used to be able to own short barrel shotguns, but that changed with the last round of gun laws.

I just re-read the prohibited firearms regs and I have to say that they are just as confusing as US laws. I appears that the law only applies to shotguns that have been modified, that is, sawed off. A shotgun with a factory 14" barrel may not be covered. I know that there is distinction in BATF regs, but a $200 transfer tax still applies.

Son-of-a-gun! It is legal to own a 14" pump shotgun in Canada. Cool! Go for it. ( I did some checking)

If you decide to get a Surefire light, remember that they have one designed for a 14" 590-A1. The standard model won't work.

14 Inch Mossberg

The plan for the Mossberg has been overtaken by my hasty deployment to Afghanistan. I ship out in the next couple of days. I guess I will have to look at it when I get back home. Keep safe all

interlude; that's a bit of an understatement, I was used to shooting a 22" 870 and took my new mossberg 18" out and that gun beat the crap out of me.

99, that Mossie probably runs at least a half lb lighter, and the stock may not fit you as well.

Also, that shorter bbl may have more blast and flash, which makes the kick FEEL harder.

Assuming good fit/form,a little familiarization will find you handling the extra kick well.
