Mossberg 590 shotgun

Has anyone here owned/used this particular shotgun? How does it compare in terms of general reliability with others such as the Remington 870 or Winchester Defender?

Used one for 2 years in Marine Corps Security Forces, very good gun, never saw any problems that wearn't simply wear and tear that could happen to any gun, and even that was rarely. I would and have trusted my life with one. It was also the first shotguns I bought when I got out.

Have no fear you can't go wrong with a 590.

I bought mine to shoot bowling pin matches with but the big match I used to go to died. I kept the gun and use it for a rough weather deer gun, as a house shotgun, and for grouse now and then.

I like the gun. Although I haven't put it to much of a test it seems tough as an old boot. The "ghost ring" peep sights work well for me and I like the nine shot capacity and the non-PC fact that it will take the M16 bayonet.

There is another of my threads about the 590 on here. Look up 590 Sluggin,' for more info.

I prefer the 870 over all others, but the Mossies are good guns. If I had a 590, I'd replace that plastic safety(if it has one) with steel and get a good smith to work the trigger a bit.

The 870 will outlast the Mossies and Winchesters, but heavy shooting for merely one generation of shooter won't see the difference.

WAG, any of them will work for 30K rounds, more than anyone except a hardcore target shooter will ever go through. An 870, maybe 50K before replacing some parts.

Get what you want, all of the Big 4 are fine shotguns....

HTH...

I too have trusted my life to a 590A1, it is a good solid shotgun. I would own one, but prefer the 870.

I do not think it is the equal to the 870, I used both in military service. I bought an 870 when I got out.

A search will get you a month of reading on this subject.

Why Dave says an 870 will outlast a 590 is unknown. I doubt he has anything other than anecdotal evidence toward this.

You like Ford or Chevy?

I like them both.

I think 870 has better ergonomics out of the box.

I can not stand the shell lifter on an 870 - ding my digits on reloads. Mossy keeps the shell lifter out of the way.

There are more add ons and do dads for 870s - if yer into that.

I have a Vang 590 with about 3k through it. I improved the action with file/emory cloth session - like butter.

What is cheap this week at the store - they both need some help to get them running fast. Can ya work a file?

Take care.

Assuming the firearms are well maintained - cleaned, lubed, etc. - steel will outlast aluminum. That's the beauty of the all-steel receivered 870...

MO, don't take it so personal, I call them like I see them.

My opinion is based an a couple of things.

First, while some trap shooters, card shooters, and other high volume shotgunners use pumps, the pumps they use are all steel receivers. 870s, Model 12s, and the ancient but superb 97 come to mind.

These folks often own Mossies, but use them for hunting, and a hunting gun sees less shells in a lifetime than a clays gun does in a year.

Second, the 870 is the choice of most agencies ofr the simple reason it holds up under abuse and neglect far better than the other brands.

This isn't opinion, MD DOC's experiment with Winchester 1200s lasted about 3 years, then the 1200s were removed from active duty due to massive malfunctions. Most were traced to dirt and grunge buildup. The 1200 is a very good shotgun when clean.

My 870TB has gone glitchless for 6-7K rounds in the last year. How about firing off an equivalent number through your 590 and get back to us on how it's holding up? Thanks...

Thought the 590s had a steel stafety and that the 500s had the cheap plastic ones. Can somebody check please?

I believe that the 590A1's have a metal safety and trigger guard, while the 590' s have the plastic one. I have a 590A1 and its has the metal parts. Besides that both guns are generally the same.
