Mossberg 590 Mariner

I saw a used Mossberg 590 Mariner for sale for $389. I was wondering if this was a good price? I mainly want a shotgun for home defense but I was also thinking about the Mossberg 500 Combo with a 28 and 18.5 inch barrel. I just don't know how much better a 590 is compared to a 500.
 
The 590 is not that much better. The real 590 A-1 is a tuffer gun I hear. But for the basic gun in the hands of the average joe who wants to also hunt with it, I suggest the 500 combo especially if the 28 inch barrel is the "accu-choke" version.

What Brent said... for your purposes, you don't really need to spend the extra bucks on the 590. (And if it's the 9-shot model, I'm not sure you could put a longer barrel on it, so it's not as versatile.)

Another thing -- if you get a combo, you want, for home defense, the plain short barrel with a cylinder choke, NOT the rifled deer barrel, which is good only for slugs. Mossberg sells more than one combo package, so be sure which one you're getting.
 
I looked at the mossberg site and they do call the gun you mention, a 590A1 with a metal trigger guard and safety button but I have never had a failure with either on my guns with plastic. The safety button in metal is available from havlin sales.

they have a 500 tactical mariner, 500 mariner 20", 500 mariner 18.5", 590 mariner, 590a1 mariner. he's probably referring to the regular 590. confusing huh? ive owned the 20" 500 and the regular 590 and really regret selling them. next s-gun purchase barring a deal i cant pass up will be a mariner a1 to match my NYPD style a1.
 
...yeah, if I had known that there was about a slim-to-nil difference from the 500 to the 590 (standard), I would have picked up the 500. Then you can have different length barrels. ah well, I'm happy with it though.
 
BTW, The only mossberg to worry about barrel limitations is the 7+1 mag tube. All 5+1 590 or 500 barrels should swap out IIRC...

Possibly. But, IMHO, the 590 is a bit better in design and offers a bit more...particularly for HD. Frankly, if I were the OP, I would hold out and try to acquire a 590A1. You could probably find such a shotgun for roughly $100 more, give or take. Personally, I prefer the 8+1 w/front bead sight. Keep in mind, the 590A1 is a heavy weapon (given the heavy walled barrel), but it does offer the metal trigger assembly, metal safety lever and of course, the heavy walled barrel. If the 8+1 (20" barrel) isnt your thing, they have an 18.5" variant available (Im thinking 6+1 capacity).

I would recommend going with the "standard" variants here, but based on what Ive seen (along with unfortunate, personal experience...ie, the wasting of funds) the 590A1s are usually equivalent in price to the "standard" models. So, again, my advice would be to get the A1 over any other.

Regardless of which Mossberg you go with, I would suggest replacing the stock mag tube spring and follower. I went with a Wolff "generic" heavy duty spring (which I cut and "shaped" myself), along with a Vang Comp stainless steel follower.

BTW- That price isnt too bad for a Mariner. But, I personally question the ability of that particular finish (nickel?) to withstand certain types of solvents/cleaners/degreasers. Again, unless you just crave the look of a Mariner, Id opt for an A1 and avoid the Mariner.
