Mossberg, 5500 Mark 2 - price check/good beginner gun??

As you all are probably tired of reading, I'm looking for my first shotgun to start doing some Skeet/Trap along w/ home defense. I seen a Mossberg 5500 Semi-auto 12 Ga w/ a 28" ribbed bbl. It also came with a 18" bbl and three Accuchokes. It's going for $300. The blueing is approximately 85%-90%.

I also saw a Beretta 686 Onyx 12ga O/U w/ a 28" ribbed bbl. This shows a little wear in the receiver, around 80% blue in tact. Bbl looks good. It comes with removable chokes. This is going for $225.

Seeing I know virtually nothing about them, other then what you all have told me, is this a good price/shotgun? Is a 12GA the best to start with or should I be looking at a different gauge?

I'm on the hunt and to be honest, it's as much fun going through gun stores as it is hitting the range.

Thanks for the information. (Again)

I don't particularly care for Mossy's autos. They make a fine pump, I've got one myself. The price is probably about right, much less than one around my neck of the woods.
But it is your gun, your choice. 2 barrels are nice to have, it's almost as good as having 2 guns.

Can't comment on the other because I've never shot one.

The Mossy autos that we sold in the early 90's came back almost as fast as we sold them. I would not recommend one.

That price on the Beretta is off by a facor of about a grand. If you've actually found one at that price, buy it tonight. If you don't like it, you can make enogh to buy two 1100s and have change left over.

The Mossberg 5500 is one of the worst shotguns ever made. They will work until you run the first box of shells thru
them.....maybe.
I understand the Mossy 9200 isn't much better. I have owned two 5500 Mossy's and sold them both.
Mossy makes a decent pump in the model 500 and the 835.
BUY THAT BERETTA NOW!

To late

Going by the posts above, I ran (literally) back to the place that had the Beretta O/U during lunch yesterday.

Unfortunately someone had already scooped it up. Well, I guess I'll chalk this one up to not having enough experience with these types of guns.

I found out that it was a consignment piece. Obviously someone just wanted to get rid of it. DAMN!

Rockriver,
Don't worry because that isn't the last time that will happen to you. It has happened to me several times. It is getting less frequent though.
Have a good one,
Jim
