Mossberg 500A price question

I recently found a listing for a mossberg 500A. The shotgun is listed for 250 dollars and the seller claims to have only shot 20 rounds out of it. 28" barrel, walnut stocks, it can accept 3" shells, leather sling, double bead sight, it also says it is an AccuChoke version. (I am more familiar with the Remington 870, but as the wife is a lefty, I'd rather have something we can both operate with ease.) That being said, I do not know how this is price wise. For the price, should I pick up this shotgun, or should I find something else? Thanks guys.

I have several Mossbergs - two of them are 500 pumps. I haven't bought one lately though so I checked my gun values book.

According to my gun values book as of 2012 edition:

Mossberg 500 Accu-Choke

Checkered walnut finished (not really walnut) wood stock, ventilated recoil pad, drilled and tapped receiver, sling swivels (and sling on some models)... Made from 1987 to date.

Unfired NIB/retail: $250
Fired but excellent: $175
Fired but good:$95

So then I guess its up to you to decide if its worth paying retail pricing for a used shotgun. Personally I'd try to negotiate to a lower price - somewhere between $250 and $175. If the gun is in excellent shape (no wear on it etc.) I'd pay $200 for it. No more though otherwise I'm better off getting a brand new gun or looking for something else.

What does this have to do with a Mossberg? It isn't like a Browning that ejects downward, or a LH 870 - maybe your wife would like that?

In November 2011 I traded in a 12ga Mossberg 500A Synthetic Stock, 28in barrel with 4 screw in chokes and choke tool as well as a 20in "Defender" style unchoked (cylinder) barrel. The LGS gave me $230 for it towards another gun. Mine was also barely used. Less than two boxes of shells thru it.

If the LGS gave me $230 for it you can bet they'll list it for $250 or more. I don't think the price you're being quoted is way out of line. But I also think you could offer less and probably still have a deal.

I bought my Mossberg 500A maybe almost two years ago for $225. It is a 24" smoothbore with rifle sights. They prices of the 500s and 870s has gone up and you just can't get them for the $150 or so like four to five years ago. I don't think $250 is a bad price. You won't find it much cheaper after tax or FFL fees from somewhere else. Mine was used and in good, but not mint, condition.

When I bought mine wholesale over 20 years ago, they were $169.00, retail was right at $199.00 - it seems they haven't gone up at all from that perspective, at least not at the rate of inflation

Thanks for the input guys, my LGS has a sale on a new 500A with 18.5" and 26" bbl for $300, so I may just get that one. I am looking forward to using it as a pheasant gun as well as my HD gun when not hunting.
