Specifically the Winchester 1300 NRA defender model v. Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge.

If you had to choose, which would you suggest? (Remington 870 is not an option at this point for some complicated reasons.)

Either one works...

go to the store and shoulder both of them and see which one feels better to you. I don't think anyone can answer that question but you. As for quality, I don't think you are giving up anything with either choice as a HD weapon. The Moss has more accessories available I think, so if thats what you are into, then go for the Moss.

I have the 18" Defender and I love it.

I'd lean toward the Defender. It has been a few years since I used the Mossberg 500. The extractor was its weak point, but I've read Mossberg has improved them.

I own a mossber 500 (12ga.) and have had no troubles with it at all, it has been a very nice gun.

However, I will say that I do like winchester shotguns as well. In the land of the pump-guns, they are all good (provided they're from a reputable manufacturer) but the reason I like the mossbergs over the 870's is because of the location of the slide un-lock, which is in the same place on the winchesters IIRC. I also like how the winchesters handle, but the mossbergs fit ME better.

Shoulder them both, and decide from that, because it doesn't matter how good a gun it is if you aren't comfortable with it.

I prefer the Mossberg myself. I own two 500’s one in 12 gauge and the other in 20.The layout of the controls are much more to my liking. I think the layout is much more intuitive. In this case specifically it comes down to the location of the safety.
