Mossberg 500! To buy or not?

I'm currently in the market for a new shotgun and my local dealer has a handful of these for sale.

It features:
3" 6 shot, 18.5" barrel, Adjustable stock, heat shield, sling, swivels, and forearm strap.

I've shot my friends 500 pistol grip and would prefer one with the stock. I'm new to shotguns and don't want to go ahead and purchase something with no knowledge on it.

What do you think? here is a ad of the product on the left hand column:

I basically want to go through a lot of ammo at the local shooting range and want it for home protection.

Fill me in if this is a good price.

Those prices are critically extremely high! regular ol' Mossberg is expected to be well under 3 yards and a maverick 88 (mossberg's lesser gun) should be under 2 and a quarter bones (225) they often have a Combo of 28 and 18 inch barrel will still come in well under the prices in the ad you posted.

Ditto what Brent said... I would certainly encourage you to buy a Mossberg 500, they are effecient, reliable shotguns and can be configured a number of ways depending on the purpose you wish to put it to. I would try to find a non-tactical combo gun with a 18.5" and 28" barrel, should be less than that abomination in the ad at any decent sporting goods store... even less used. You can always add that plastic later if you really want to.

they are great shotguns. i have one in 20 gauge and its been flawless so far. its the same shotgun that the military uses and lots of police departments use them as well. mine was $219 with a vent rib 26'' barrel and a 18.5'' barrel.

if you are using it for home defense or you are a marine clearing rooms in Iraq then that is a good set up, but if you actually want to use it for clays or for bird then get a vent rib barrel and a full length stock. that tactical crap sure does look cool, but its kinda dumb if you are at a range with a 18.5'' barrel shooting clays. it can be done and works well if you know that you are doing, but the 26'' barrel and full stock make a huge difference.

in all its a fantastic shotgun no matter how you look at it. lake care of it and it will last a couple decades, at the least.

Where will I be able to find one in the prices you guys stated? I'm in CA if it matters.

And what's PRK?

Will do. Thanks.

What are the odds of me finding one that still sell guns?

Any other stores that have mossbergs for sale?

I have a mossberg 500 tactical persuader and I love mine bought it for a lot more than those prices though. (I live in Canada) Geez firearms are cheap in the states lol.

if you live in CA go to big 5. that's where i got my 20 gauge at $219. it was listed "on sale" at $269, but then they rung it up at the counter the computer said it was $219, so that's what they sold it to me for.

Big 5 will be much less expensive than that, but it wont have a heat shield unless you buy the 590, which isn't a bad shotgun either, but it cost more.

Browsing through the big 5 site, and came across the same one as in the ad for the same price, walmart search was unsuccessful.

Big 5. that what I'm trying to tell you. I recently bought a mossberg 500 20 gauge with 18.5'' barrel and a 26'' barrel with a choke at big 5 for $219. the 12 gauge will be $269, but maybe you will get lucky like i did. pay them a visit and see what they have.

another thing when buying from big 5 is that they will be priced high. Ask to see the gun, inspect it, purposely look at other guns and remain skeptical. then ask the salesman "what the best price yo can give me". then will give it to you for the sales price.

Every time i have bought a rifle or shotgun there they give it to me at the sales price. i bought a m44 marked at $189 and got it for $75. Bought a marlin .22 and they took $25 off. Saved $50 on the shotgun etc... the aren't really a "deal", but they make you think you are getting a deal. if you don't ask they will sell it high.

Thanks for the advice and tip the rifleer, I will pay them a visit tomorrow and see what they have.
