My shop quoted me a price of $420
Seems kinda pricey, but then if you add up all the options already on it....
What do you guys think?

I just want to find out what kind stock is on it and just buy that since I prefer the 590 series.
The stock has a 5 shell holder on the right side.
I have searched the web and cannot find a review or info on who makes the stock.
Looks kinda like a ATI but I'm not sure...

The extra money you are paying is more for the barrel, not so much the stock. The stocks is an ATI stock, the ATI stocks had problems when they 1st came out, but the problems have been fixed, from what I hear. They are nowhere near the quality of a Knoxx, though, but they're also a lot less $$.

The barrel is what you are paying for, think of it this way...if you bought a "standard" model 500 how much would you have to pay for that barrel? Mossberg doesn't sell the barrels seperately for the 500, yet. They do sell them for the Remington 870 and they run between $150 to $175 (street price). The tactical gun $420, a standard 500 is somewhere in the $275 - $300 range so you're getting the barrel for right around retail and they're throwing the cheap stock in for free.

I just wish they would make a 590 barrel with the "Breacher" end...

The 500 barrels w/o clean out tube are still LEO, same with the 500/590 5+1 w/cleanout tube. There are also barrels for the 20" 590's that gives you a 23" barrel.

870's are availible if you can find them. I can provide them to agency's or dealers as a LE Distributor.

So, if or when the Model 500 18.5" barrel is ever sold to the "public", will they fit on a 6-shot 590? They appear to have the same removable cap instead of the "screw-type" that stay with the barrel.

If mossberg really jerks people around with LE only BS on non-tax stamp Items just forget them and get a Remingtion... no one I know has ever had a problem ordering anything in their LE line as long as you don't need a tax stamp for it (i.e. short barreled guns.), several distributors carry the remington LE guns and frankly I've always thought they were better weapons anyway.

Sorry folks maybe it's just me but I see more and more makers pulling this kind of BS and we should not support them... it's bad enough that we get it from the anti's no need to tolerate this from makers as well.

Mossberg is selling the complete guns in two differant configurations to the public right now. Barrels will follow, they are just meeting demand for the complete guns right now. I found both in my local Gander Mountain so please calm the rhetoric. They don't make Remington's so those barrels are an extra for the users of the Remington. All in all I think they are supporting the end users preety well.

There are two differant 500/590 barrels. 1 for the screw in 5+1 500's, 1 for the mag cap/clean out tube 590's. The 500's being sold has complete guns use this barrel. A barrel is also availible for the 14 1/2" 590's, I think the barrel is longer I haven't purchased any yet.

$420? I wouldn't pay it. I bought a stock 500A and slapped a heavy-walled 18.5" Accu-choke police barrel on it and the total cost was:

standard Mossberg 500A from Academy = $199
18.5" Accu-choke police barrel = $69

Total = $270

The gun is ultra-short, lightweight, has 6-round capacity, and the barrel is the police version which is much thicker than what Mossberg puts on the civilian models of the 500 (think 590A1, but shorter). I also have the option of changing chokes, which makes the gun way more versatile since I'm not stuck with whatever pattern a cylinder bore would throw with my chosen defense load.

You could go that route and still come out with $150 extra to spend. ;)

Also, I'd stick with a standard stock....the Mossberg safety is in the worst possible location if you are going to use a pistol grip stock. If you absolutely have to have a pistol grip, you might want to look into the Remington 870 which has the safety in a more comfortable and accessible position when using pistol grips.

590 with heat shield and just a pistol grip $328 out the door

Thanks for all your replies.

Yeah,Smitty a 590 breacher barrel would be nice, however for the HD role it would serve no purpose really. Looks mean though.
Tantrix, I’m a die hard Mossberg shooter, the slide release on the 870 is what makes the difference for me.

I have never owned a 500 model so I did not realize there was a big difference with the barrels.
I just assumed the cruiser or persuader 500 models came with a 18.5 barrel.
After reading your opinions I opted to purchase a black 590 with heat shield and just a pistol grip.
Bass pro shops had it on the rack for $328 out the door.
I’m either gonna put a top folder or just keep the pistol grip since I want this one for HD.

I really want a quality top folder, like the metal kind from the 80’s.
Anybody?

The polymer/nylon is ok I guess,but I guess I’m kinda nostalgic.
I already own a 590 mariner with all the bells and whistles, which goes on short ocean voyages now and then.[everything plastic]
I just wanted something for the house.
