I have a 1985 Mossberg 500 in 12ga. and need to change out the magazine tube spring. I looked at it and cannot figure out if it comes out of the reciever end or not. I figured I would ask before I start getting frustrated trying to unscrew something that shouldnt. If someone can tell me how to do this I would appreciate it. Thanks, Mike

The tube is threaded and possibly Loctited to the receiver. You need to heat the receiver with a heat gun to break the Loctite, then carefully use a small strap wrench at the receiver/tube junction to loosen the tube. The strap wrench may also be used at the top of the tube which is much more solid. You can crush the tube if you don't get the Loctite well broken.

I usually don't re-Loctite the tube because of the hassle of taking it apart again. However if you shoot a lot, or sometimes because of manufacturing tolerances being on the loose side, you will have to use the blue Loctite (never red). Recoil on a 12 gauge can be brutal on the parts, and you sometimes don't have much other choice.
Make sure you use a heat gun, not a torch, because you probably will destroy the finish on both the tube and receiver. Sometimes the tube can be a bear to remove and other times you will think, what was the fuss all about.
I've never used a dowel in the tube, please let us know how that turns out if you use one.
