mossberg 500 shell stop problem

So several months ago I was out shooting some cheap 2 3/4" federal #6 shot out of my brand new, 100% stock mossberg 500 persuader.(20" cyl bore 7+1 w/3" chamber) I had some ear protection in and I was just a-popping away at some various backstops, pretty much plinking around to get a good feel of my new gun, as I planed to use it for rural home defence if not my 18" 870 express magnum. Well, bottom line is, I took a shot and felt something semi-heavy hit my right shoe. As it turns out that object was an unfired shell that was aparently jarred loose from the magazine tube! Of course the problem being that if I load 8 rds into my shotgun I expect there to be 8 potential bangs in the gun! While granted, that is a pretty serious issue, I chose to write it off as a strange freak accident or possibly a lesser protruding rim of the cheap shell. I soon forgot about the whole thing as it did not happen again for quite some time, well that is until today. I was observing the patterning of some 3" federal black cloud through the same gun. Low and behold an unfired shell hits the ground at my feet. Good Lord! this is unacceptable in a "mil-spec" shotgun! I noted that both times involved federal ammunition, cheap and otherwise. So my questions for you fine people are as follows: Have you heard of this happening before? Is it a problem common of federal ammo AND/OR my above mentioned shotgun? Please respond with any info, thanks in advance!:D

I appreciate the link klawman:) I saw one other thread on "THR" as well that was very similar. Unfortunately both seem to have a slightly different problem than mine. They both say it happens when they rack the action back, however my problem is that I have the weapon shouldered, safety off, pull the trigger, boom, and the non-spent shell hits the ground leaving the spent shell in the chamber without the pump moving an inch, as if perhaps the shell stop was vibrated to a releasing position and this all happening completely independantly from the racking of the pump. Quite literally an immediate reaction to firing the weapon. While of course it has only happened twice in my ownership of the gun I would hate for it too happen when it counts...

Oh, and I should also add that I have ruled out the possibility of not loading the shell into the mag tub all the way, as it happened on the third shell fired (the "should have been" fourth fell out). Plus I always make sure the last shell is in by pushing it a good quarter to half inch past the shell stop.

Yes sir Mr. Klawman! I believe that is spot on, I appreciate the help! Don't know how I missed that... I just took it clear apart and cleaned and lubed it all up nice and proper. Now when I load shells into the tube I hear an audibly pleasant vibrating kind of noise every time the rim of the shell passes the shell stop. I have not heard that noise for a good while... quite frankly I forgot about it until I heard it again. maybe it was gunked up a little preventing it from moving freely? I'm not sure... I did take a good look at where the shell stop sits on the shell and it seems to be on there pretty good, I really wish I would have taken a picture before I cleaned it up to see if it made a real difference so that I could confirm whether or not I solved the problem. At least that way I would have known if bending was required or if the cleaning took care of it, now that I may or may not have fixed it I would hate to bend it and have failure to feed a shell into the elevator.:D Hahahaha!! Oh me and my situations:) I guess only time will tell

I am glad you fixed it. I had only read that and notice some of the guys with Mossberg experience recommended bending the shell stop. Anyway, besides convenience, time, and cost saved, it feels good to be able to fix your own stuff.

Just wondering, any accounts of this happening with a remington 870? That would make a pretty serious jam, the elevator on the mossberg is up when the bolt is closed so the round just falls to the ground, but the 870 elevator stays down so if one was to fall out it would stay in the reciever and make a heck of a mess! Honestly if that happened in a firefight with a mossberg, you could stay in the fight without a hitch, but with the 870 as much as it pains me to say this... it is not worth your life, I would have to drop it and draw a secondary weapon(hope you have one)

Just a thought anyways

Doc, the 870 would not have been the LE shotgun of choice for the last half century had there been any history of glitches.

A non issue....

Thanks.

If everything in my life worked as well and as long an an 870 does, I'd still be driving a 61 Chevy P/U.
