Mossberg 500 Question

While I was fighting with Remington over a lemon 870 Wingmaster.. I picked up about a 20 year old Mossberg 500 thats needed a couple things to get it up and running.. I have all the parts and have shot it several times... To get it to feed from the magazine 100% of the time, I have to bring the slide back significantly harder than I'm used to working an 870.. Everything is lubed and its not hard to move the slide back, I just have to do it with more vigor than I would have use with an 870 or model 12.. Is this normal or am I missing something??

Full strip, clean and reassemble?

Nothing is staked so you can easily clean it easy. Dirt behind shell stop bars or in action bar grooves can cause such a symptom.

As you come back on the action, the shell lifter goes down and squeezes in on the shell stops to free the next round. If grunge behind them it can require more force. Same goes for mung in the action bar grooves... specially at full rear ward travel as excess grease and oil (don't over oil 'em) mix with any propellant residue and get shoved aft with each cycle.

It was full of crud and dried up lubricant when I got it... I had to fully strip it down to get it clean.. I even had to remove the magazine tube as it was was full of crud.. I'll check for crud behind the shell stops and in the action bar grooves.. Thanks!!

+1 There's gunk in them thar channels. The arms need a swipe with a file maybe? Never heard of one that needed such, but...

Maybe a bent Shell Stop

Like Hogdogs said. A good cleaning...But you said you did that. I had this same issue recently and I only needed a cleaning(thankfully). It was not ejecting the last shell and I needed to pump it harder in order for the stop to release a shell. Since you cleaned it maybe the shell stop is bent and needs replacing. I have heard of people straightening it with a hammer. Like a $10 item link below. Good luck.

Pics of internals? Strip it down again. Lay it out like the pic below. Maybe one of us will see something that doesn't look right.

I did "tweak" my elevator by splaying it out at the top of the "U" a few thousandths on one 500 that was hesitant to drop the first shell or 2 from a full mag...

I don't have a camera good enough to get the high resolution pictures to aid in a TFL diagnosis... I'm going to take it apart and take a look at the shell stop and interrupter latch after work tomorrow... I appreciate all of the responses and helpful information I'm receiving... This Mossberg is really starting to grow on me... I like how the internals are much more user serviceable compared to other designs...

Thanks for all the advice... After the addition of a Brownell's stainless magazine follower, Wolff high energy mag spring and a new cartridge interrupter my 500 functions 100%... I may take this one dove hunting after taking it to the skeet range today :D
