mossberg 500 problem

I have a 500 that I have put many rounds thru mostly birdshot with no problems then recently i was shooting some S&B buckshot and has some failures to extract then I was shooting some federal classic buck and had a few more failures? why would my shotgun perform so well and then start to do this? could it be operator error could I be putting presure on the action when I am firing the buck?

any ideas?
 
Could be operator error, but more likely grunge has built up enough someplace to impede function. A good cleaning would be the first thing to try...

I just wish i could shoot it more often to diagnose the problem but the range near by doesn't allow rifles/shotguns. Oh well i guess I will just have to grab the mini 14 with 30rds of 223!
 
I had trouble with the S&B buckshot also. Erratic extraction out of my moss 590. Eventually shot it all up in my other guns and haven't bought any more. On close examination it seemed that the rim of the base wasn't "grippable" it flared and prevented the extractor from grabbing hold. Might want to look closely at your shells.
 
Try cleaning the locking bolt cutout on the barrel extension, and strip the gun completely and clean the locking lug of the bolt. Powder residue can build up in these areas, causing sticky extraction. After cleaning, a very light film of oil can be applied to the top of the bolt carrier (the part that cams the locking block into the barrel extension). Hope this helps!

is it very hard to completely strip your mossberg 500? I amagine you would punch out the pins and it would come apart?
 
I've shot quite a bit

of the S&B 3" buckshot with my 500 (fairly new) "Special Purpose" never had a problem with it, or any other loads(and never had extraction problems from any of my 500s, even after many 1000s of rounds)...Agree its possibly dirty, somewhere...If you're sure its clean, I'd have a gunsmith check out the mechanics, could be something worn/broken
