Mossberg 500 problem

My Mossberg 500 is having problems ejecting.

The shells get jammed and won't eject after firing. Not every time -- say 25% of shots. But when they do get jammed, they really get jammed.

Used 2 3/4 inch Winchester, low brass (within specs).

I've used this ammo many many times and never had a problem. On the other hand, this was old ammo that I was getting rid of --maybe a year old.

The action seems to be fine.

I know this isn't much info, but any ideas if it's my gun or the ammo?

I'm leaning towards old ammo, but ...

Change out the ammo and then see if it still has a problem. The only thing I could see is if the ejector has possibly began to work itself loose.

The only Mossy I ever saw that would "jam" was an 18" PG model that had been left on a shelf above a deep fryer in a resturant. The owner managed to warp the frame.

Yeah, I might get out Friday (to wear in my new .357 :D ), and I'll have to put new shells through the Mossy. I sure hope that's all it is.

is a year considered old? i generally shoot ammo that is at least that old with no problems. maybe you just got a bad batch, it happens sometimes.

Are the extractors slipping off the shell? Or is the shell getting stuck, and you can't pump it? Are they the aluminum ones? Might to clean and polish the chamber.

I'd suspect grunge buildup is the culprit. A deep cleaning here will fix, IMO. Be sure to get in the extractor "Hook" and the chamber.

Well, sort of both stuck shells and slippnig extractor.

The pump action doesn't seem to be impeded, so I assume the extractors are slipping off -- if the action should be impeded when the shells are stuck, then I've got an extractor problem, eh? Do they grab the brass so tight that a stuck shell can keep the action from coming back?

The shells are in there like they are glued. One time, the only way I could get the [verified fired] shell out was to remove the barrel and push the shell out with a stick down the muzzle. The other times, it was necessary to pry the shell loose.

The other 75% of the time, everything works like a charm.

I've heard of "shell swelling" and I'm wondering if that's it. I guess I'll have to see the next time I get out, which now looks like it won't be this week.

No, I don't think it's gunk. Living in the 'burbs like I do, I don't get to shoot that often, and I'm pretty religious about giving my guns a full cleaning after each session.

No, not aluminum.

No, I don't really consider a year ancient, either. I've shot older, myself. I'm just covering all the bases.
