Mossberg 500 ghost ring installation

I'm dumbfounded.

I ordered a ghost ring kit for my mossberg mariner. The kit suggests installation by a gunsmith so, without delay, I dropped it off at our town's only smith. I called them up to check the status of my gun and am now being told they can't install the front sight without damaging the finish.

I've been told that silver soldering is the proper way to attach these sights. I'd rather not do it myself with JB weld as I've heard a couple of folks state that the front sight will eventually pop off from exposure to recoil.

So what the heck? Is my smith an idiot or just being honest? These sights do me no good being OFF the gun.

Thanks for the references.

I talked with the smith and he explained it well. To silver solder it, he would have to heat up the barrel. Supposedly a blued barrel won't show solder work too much, but apparently Mossberg's marinecoat finish would be painfully obvious after a heat treatment.

I wanted to avoid an epoxy treatment if at all possible since my gun goes in and out of a scabbard quite a bit. Lots of abuse for an epoxied sight I would think.

So in the long run I apparently can't get extra barrels in marinecoat nor can I do custom work. It seems more and more that anything outside of a blued finish just isn't worth it.
