Mossberg 500 Forarm Replacement Help

I want to replace the wood forarm of my Mossberg 500 with a black synthetic one.

What tool do I need to get the tube nut off?

The instructions say to use a spanner wrench. Where can I get a spanner wrench, or is there something else I could use?

any store

a spanner wrench is just another name for a wrench.

so, any wrench that fits will work, even a crescent wrench (if it fits) will work.

Sorry, but its not QUITE that easy, they don't take anything like a normal wrench. There are "special" wrenches for that purpose, but I've removed and replaced many over the years (owned Mossberg 500s for 35 years.)

I usually just take a screwdriver, put one layer of fabric(like a shop rag) over it, and "tap" (in one of the 2 grooves in the forearm nut) it 'til its loose enough to remove by hand. Doesn't take much. Use the same technique to tighten (not much force required).

Not to rub it on, but that is why I like my Remington 870. While they make a special tool to remove that special bolt, I have always been able to coax mine loose with a flat head screw driver and then push/twist it the rest of the way using my thumb. Can't you do this on a Moss? If not...that sucks. And yes, while what I described sounds like it might damage the gun or my hand it has never required that much force and has always been easy to do.

Well, I tried the screwdriver method, but didn't have any luck.

The gunsmith said he'd swap the forends and the pistol grip for around $15. I'm going to let him have at it tomorrow.
