Mossberg 4x4

Starting to look at a new inexpensive rifle. Can't find much info on the mossberg 4x4, and the opinion of the 100 ATR on this site is not very positive. Any opinions on the 4x4? Also, can you comment on the dislikes of the 100 ATR. I see statements like don't buy them, but no real explanations given. Also looking at the marlin XL7. Thanks

I don't know much about the 4X4. However I had an ATR100 in .270. The rifle shot fine and we took a couple of deer with it. The problem I had with it was all the negative reviews on the bolt design. It seems the bolt had a poor design and there are cases of it blowing back into the shooters face. I never had this problem with mine but I wasn't willing to chance it after everything I read about it. I sold it and bought a savage.

I have both, XL-7 (.30-06) and 4X4 (.25-06). The XL-7 design/materials are better. Both are accurate for hunting rifles. As for looks, I prefer the 4x4 over the XL-7.

Another rifle you should consider is the TC Venture. Mine is a .270 and I highly recommend this rifle over the above. The accuracy, design, feel, materials of the Venture put it in a different league. With the current TC rebate, it is in the same pricing ballpark.

Mossberg 4x4 270

I just bought one recently Mossbergs 270 4x4 with the synthetic stock like 2 weeks ago and a Weatherby 7mm rem mag. I have tried nearly every ammunition through both now that its getting cold its easier to test fire at the range from a cold barrel. It is an awsome awsome rifle if you can match the ammo the gun likes not always the most expensive is the best. I found Hornady Custom 270 139 grain sp to be the best first shot dead bulls. I took 5 more shots all cold barrel and all within 1/2 in group. I bought the gun on a whim because I had no clue Mossberg even made rifles so I said to myself let me toss $300 in it and see what happens. It may just be my go to gun next season. I am not a Marksman so the gun shoots good just find what it likes.:)

I have a 100ATR that is a few years old. I have done trigger work on it and have installed a laminate stock now that they are available. Biggest issue is probably the cheap stock. They have improved the trigger if you get the LBR type. Mine is .243 and with handloads it is an MOA rifle. If your choice is price driven, I would just say this: The basic entry level Rem 700 or Savage 10/110 would be a better choice because you get a rifle that has resale value and unlimited upgrade options for only about 100 more whereas the Mossberg 100ATR as well as TC Venture, Savage AXIS, Rem 770 etc is: What comes out of the box is what you are stuck with. For example there are still no aftermarket triggers available for mine, Mossberg will not even sell a replacement unless you send them the rifle and pay them to install it. I reworked mine and it is now acceptable but not great.
As for the 4x4, I hear it is a better rifle but have never fired one. If it is what used to be the 1500 it is the same action as the Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard.

I checked out an XS7 .308 at a gun show last weekend. If I was in the market for an inexpensive .308, that would be the rifle. It had a very nice trigger for a sub $300 rifle.

Just Picked Mine Up.....

I just picked up my Mossberg 4x4 in a 22-250.

I couldnt be happier!!!! This rifle is AWESOME!!!! I was looking for a cheap good coyote rifle. I looked at the savage axis, marlin x7vh and the mossberg 4x4. And chose the mossberg. Being a fan of the savage, I was leaning toward the axis. The axis is just an ugly rifle and in my opinion, less than basic. Handled one and really didn't like the feel. I originally tried to get my hands on the marlin because I like the heavy long barrel, but because of it being so new, it was never available to buy or order. So my heart was set on the mossberg because of all its bells and whistles. My first day out with a half hearted sight in job I was picking off 2 liter Mt dew water bottles (at 200yrds) without even trying. Being impressed with my purchase, I took her to the range to see what else she could do. My best group at 100 yrds was unders a DIME!! not a quarter, a dime!! Shot from a bench and sandbags. I didn't even shoot reloads or high dollar ammo, it was just good ol fashioned white box wal mart winchester bulk 45 gr varmint ammo.

This is what it can do at 100yrds

With 3 rounds left i figured what the heck, lets see what she does at 200 yrds. The dime in both pics is the same dime. I had a flyer a few inches off on the 200 yrd target, but am still very impressed!!

Overall the rifle has a unique look. I liked it over the savage axis even though I am more of a savage fan. For the money, you cant beat it. The stock is not a high dollar stock, but not as flimsy as the savage stock. I do like the look of it though. The vents on the forend do function and the barrel is free floating. The muzzle break on an already loud 22-250 is a bit of an ear ringer but taking it off and replacing it with the thread saver it comes with, seemed to help. Doesnt look as wicked though. The 1:10" twist is the tightest of the three rifles and from the shooting results, apparently does the trick. Im going to try some 55gr vmax that I have loaded later. The fluted barrel does cool VERY quickly and the action is just as smooth if not smoother than the savage. With the high cheek piece, it is very comfortable to shoot and is very fast to get on when hunting. The finish is not a high quality gloss or anything fancy, but I am going to camo dip mine anyway so for me thats not an issue. Hope this helps anyone looking.

You must have missed my opinion about the 100ATR. I like my 100ATR 30-06. I can pop the dime sized red dot in the center of a shoot-n-c pistol target all day at 100yds. From a bench of course. With cheapo Federal 150gr PowerShoks. That tells me that if there is any missing going on in the field it will be me, not the rifle.

Don't know about the 4X4, but I've never had a bad Mossberg. They shoot well, cost only a little, and look fine. In order of importance.

Ya I guess I missed your previous post. Thats awesome shooting though. This is my families 3rd mossberg, my first. My wife has a pink 702 plinkster that is a blast to shoot and my son has the half pint 801 plinkster. Both are just 22lr but man they are fun. The 702 sucks to clean, but what semi-auto 22lr doesnt. My ruger 10/22 is just as big a pain in the butt as hers is to clean. My wife is a squirrel killin machine with that rifle. Anyway, mossbergs have my vote. Just good ol affordable, accurate rifles.

Just so you guys & gals know, the 4X4 is basically the same action as the ATR100, just with a longer barrel, and different stock, and the LBA trigger.

I own several of these rifles and they are all shooters. I have also done an in-depth write up on how to modify the pre-LBA triggers to make them AWESOME shooters. It is posted here: http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/489623/site_id/1#import

Lot's of updates were made after the initial post was done, so please read through the entire post before doing your trigger job. I also have information on how to modify your bolt for added security. It should be noted though, that I have never heard of another bolt blowing up and injuring the shooter after the first 2 or 3 reports. Bottom line, in my opinion, the bolt issue is a non-issue.

I probably won't be purchasing any more Mossbergs though as I have an on-going love affair with Browning.. Expensive, but worth every penny.

The problem I had with it was all the negative reviews on the bolt design.
I have read a lot of those reviews, as well. They were concentrated over a short time period a couple of years ago, and a lot of them were second hand accounts that traced back to the same handful of original sources (I have done a bit of research on Mossberg's rifles). There have been no real reports of anything like that recently that I can find.
I have never gotten to fire the 4x4, but I have shouldered one at a store, and I liked the heft and general feel of it (it was the laminate wood and blued barrel version). Seems pretty well put together, to me - especially for the price.
