Am going to get a Mossberg 500. Would like to know your thoughts on the 18 1/2 vs. the 20" barrels. Obviously it's not much of a difference. Just wondering about others' experiences. Thanks.

Uhm, it depends on what you want to use it for. If you intend to use it for HD, then I'd go with the 18.5, no reason for any added lenght. And the extra 1.5 inches of barrel will not tighten up your pattern at all.

the 20" usually means 1 extra round....

that said, i have 3x 18.5" shottys (and sold the 20" 590A1 i had previously)...

who needs more?

The 20" is 7 rounds +1 in the tube....I actually have both the 18.5" and the 20"....both are fine shotguns, both are good for HD, usually i would think you don't need 2 extra shots, unles planning on a zombie invasion, but what the heck...why not? Basically, go with ever your most comfortable and happy with. -BamaXD (a happy Mossberg owner)

It's generally much easier to buy a additional barrel for the 18.5" model 500. You can get barrels for shooting clays, hunting, slugs, even a muzzle loader.

AFAIK, there are no accessory barrels for the 20" model. However, the 20" barrel model does hold two more rounds than the 18.5" barrel.

Mossberg

I picked up a "combo" set Mossberg 500 about 12 years ago. It is a synthetic stocked version with an 18.5" and a 28" barrel. That setup is a lot of gun for the money - $200 if I remember correctly. It was something of an impulse purchase so I've only put maybe 100 rounds through it (I've mostly shot my Wingmaster's for clays). The 18.5" is definitely a pretty handy length for in-house use, although I doubt another 1.5" would make much difference. The problem I have with the thing is that the stock dimensions are such that my thumb can hit me in the nose on recoil if I'm not careful in mounting the thing so I'm thinking about selling it. Otherwise, it seems to be a very solid shotgun.

18.5 vs 20 inch

Hi I have owned and used both lengths. Ditto the above posts. In addition to the extra rd capacity of the longer barrel comes a slightly more muzzle heavy feel and balance to it..It is not a big difference, but the shorter version seems a little quicker to swing and handle for me anyway. About the only time you may consider the longer barrel beneficial is for the extra mag capacity.

I bought the 20" for the bigger mag tube. I figured 8+1 rounds of 00 buckshot........GET SOME!

The downside is, it's heavy. It's cool but if I had to buy it over again, I'd probably go with the 18 1/2.
