Moss 9200 fail to feed

My mossberg model 9200, 12 ga, 2 3/4"- 3", gas operated, autoloader, often fails to return to battery after firing 15 - 20 shells. After detail cleaning it is good for another 15 - 20 shells, then fails to feed.

Action return spring feels very weak, compared to a rem 1100 anyway. Any ideas on how to correct? Seems a stronger return spring may help, is the "jungle gun" versions return srping compatible?

Any suggestions, aside from getting rid of the shotgun, are appreciated. BTW, the shotgun has had approximately 300 shells through it and hangs up with both dept store promotional loads and win AA loads.

Thanks

Kerth, I don't think there's an auto around that is chambered for 3" shells and will function reliably with AA loads. Unless it has a gas adjustment or in the case of guns like the Browning A-5 where you change the spring and friction rings around for different loads. An auto's timing depends on the size of the gas port and if it's sized to shoot 3" mags reliably it's too small for target loads. If you plan to only shoot lighter loads like that then you need to open the gas port. George

9200 is a good gun IMHO

Kerth I had a 9200, I just sold it to a friend. I just could not warm up to the 9200 over my 1100’s nothing wrong with it just didn’t feel right in my hands. I went shooting with my friend today as a matter of fact, about 150 3 dram low base 7’s and 8’s later it was still running fine just as it had for me. If your shooting less than 3 dram loads you might try the slightly hotter loads. Also when you say, “Detail cleaned” did you clean the gas ports out? Something I learned a long time ago,Gas guns need clean ports!!! One of my 1100’s choked with a brand new Remington Slug barrel with 3 dram field loads, since the barrel was “NIB” I didn’t do anymore than run a bore mop through it and go shooting, well I found out the ports were plugged enough that the light loads choked, anything heavier ran fine. I did nothing more than run the right sized drill bit SHANK END BY HAND into the ports to clear them out, you would not believe the crud that came out of those ports it’s a wonder it functioned at all. next range trip I ran atleast 4 boxes of the same loads not one problem. Bottom line is the 9200 in my experience are not a temperamental shotgun, check your ports give it a light oil and lube and try a bit hotter load. one more thing check out the O ring seal for the gas system, if it's tore cracked ect. replace it.

have a 9200 with same problem

Have tried all except a new O-ring, which I just havent put in yet. Gun ran great on a steady diet of AA and AA reloaded light target loads meant for a O/U Red Label. Check the inside of the chamber when you remove the barrel. I had a ring where the bolt strikes the end of the barrel. I removed that burr and polished it up with a dremel. That did the trick for a while. Possibly is the gas port needs a better cleaning. But still do check the chamber for burrs after the first cople hundred rounds.
