Moss 500 shells drop out

at the sporting clays my Mossberg 500 sometimes soes not chamber the 2nd shell. i operatew the pump and the second 1 falls out on the ground. then i get a "click" and not the second bird (OK i usually miss even if the shell goes in the chamber, im honest)

i have repeted the same problem using 3" shells too. thinking the 2-3/4 low brass was the problem.

any suggestions?

I know this might sound crazy but make sure you push that shell in good and far. Rugerdude uses a 500 riot gun for skeet and has had this happen on multiple occasions and now he just makes sure to push it in extra far and since he has been forcing himslef to do it this problem hasnt happened since.
Good luck welcome to our humble website and happy shooting.

Skeetin' is indeed correct! I had this happen to me a couple of times (not in competition thank god) and you need to make sure you put those shells ALL the way in.

What I do is put the shells in, as well as the end of my finger to make sure they're in there good.

And welcome to the firing line!

improvement...not solved

after the 1st day this happened i took it down to clean, better than field cleaning.
next time out it dropped the 2nd shell on the 1st station. at that point i started pushing the shell way up in the tube. fingers all dirty as proof, it still dropped 2 more that day.
someonde suggested and i followed the idea, cycle the action really HARD and make sure it travels the whole way both directions.
these 2 things greatly improved the reliability but:
last time out it dropped 2 of 100
im not that good so that alone doesnt mess up the score BUT it gets me all rattled and then im not concentrating on the targets but on the 500 messing up.
I cannot see that anything is that worn that it should be doing this.
the 500 seems to have a reputation for being very reliable.

I bought it from the original owner. he got it from Wally World and used it to deer hunt in GA. he gave me a bunch of slugs with it. he wanted a rifle. he had it advertised on the bulletin board at wally world cheap so i bought it. he had wife and 5 kids so the deer was food.
i only shot about 10 rounds from 2001 until i got into the sporting clays this summer.
ill keep trying

appreciate the tips so far
open to other suggestions

some times the shell stop gets whacked out of alignment. the shell stop is that little flat piece of steel that sits at the end of the mag tube and catches the second shell and holds it in the magtube. as you cycle the action it stays fully extended until the very end of the back stroke and then is tripped by the bolt body and release the shell for just an instant and then the finger has caught the next shell from leaving the magtube.

Find this piece of the gun and hold it in place and drycycle the gun and watch what it does. after you determine what it is and how it works, strip the gun and be very finicky about cleaning not only the shell stop but he little track in the side of the reciever as well and the bolt in the area where it strikes the shell stop. lightly lube everything with break free or triflow and reassemble the gun. if after doing this you do not notice an improvment, call Mossberg and ask them if that is a part you can buy. some companies will sell that part, some will not, and you have to go to a gunsmith and have him order the part. It maybe that your part was on the short side, maybe it snapped off. but maybe a new part will solve that provlem

The son of a guy with whom I shoot has come with us a number of times and has had the exact same trouble with his mossy. He solved his problem by purchasing an 1187 for sporting clays.

call maooberg

call mossberg. I do not know how old your gun is but they have a 10 year warrenty. I just sent my 590 is for repair.

heres how

I bought a new moss 500 in 2000, and had the exact same problem.
the stamped parts in the action are a little rough.

Strip the gun and with fine sandpaper or a very fine(220) sanding disc on a dremel tool smooth the edges of the shell stop bars and the tracks for them and the grooves, also the sides of the frame. I am not saying grind anything but LIGHTLY POLISH these pieces until they work smoothly.

Probably 300 to500 rounds through the gun will solve this on its own but you are simply being stumped by some slightly rough edges.

I am still not sure which piece was causing this but I polished the bolt, shell carrier, and the edges of the shell stop bars and it went away, and by the way the action got much smoother (duh, sometimes i an a little slow)

Also you should know that if you send your barrel back to mossberg they will port your barrel for (I think) about $25, definitely worth it if you continue to shoot trap or sporting clays

Guntotin has the right idea. There are two feed fingers on the Mossberg 500.

The forwardmost, on the right side of the receiver (same side as the ejection port) pivots up and down and holds the remaining round rounds in the magazine as the next round to be fired is released to be chambered. This one usually gives no trouble.

The rearmost (left side of the receiver) releases the next round and is like a leaf spring. On well used guns, it will often lose its spring tension and allow the remaining rounds in the magazine to spill out on the ground.

I have fixed several Mossbergs by stripping them down enough to remove the offending feed finger and carefully bending it out enough to restore proper function. Cycling the slide on an empty gun while looking through the loading port will give you an idea on what needs to happen here. Using dummy rounds will make it especially clear.
