Mosquito/Black Fly Repellent Question

I'm going on a black bear hunt around September 21st in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the weather can be either very warm or a bit on the cool side. Mosquito's and black flies may be a factor. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with that little sound generating repellent device. I can't remember the name of it but it's supposed to keep mosquito's at bay around you. Scent control seems to be very important in this type of hunt so the normal slap it on stuff won't work for me. What are those things called so I can check them out and see if they are something that might work for me? Thanks guys!:) Edited: Well I found what I was wondering about. It's called a Thermacell and it is a heat generated supposed non-scented vapor that keeps the insects away. It is not sound generated like I thought. Does anyone have any experience with these units? Thanks!

I hunted red deer in New Zealand where there were a lot of mosquitos & sand flies. The New Zealand guides trick was to use baby oil on exposed areas. The insects would get their wings wet when they landed and would not bite. The baby oil had no fragrance to scare deer off. I never heard of this method before, but I can assure you it works.

Thermacell works. It costs a little to operate it all day every day but each little butane tank and thermacell patch are used up pretty fast.
I wear a bug-tamer suit.
It is a mosquito and biting fly barrier. I wear it in 80 degree weather in Texas, so it is cool enough. I bought a 2X large so I can wear it over everything else. It comes in Camo.
It has a hood and large face cover. You can pull it over and tuck it into the collar. It has elastic around the wrist and ankle.
Good luck on your bear hunt. Take pic's.

I have some spray on stuff. Spray it on your clothes, let it dry, then you are supposed to be bug proof. Highly recommended by a number of long distance backpackers who have dealt with black fly in main. I will post what it is when I get home.
They still wore mosquito nets around their face b/c the flies were annoying if they got close.

Try Sawyers or Duranone clothing treatment. Bugs land.........and fall off dead. :D

A little DEET on exposed skin and you should be good.

I used to live there before moving to the desert, Clothing never seemed to be an effective barrier to keeping the black flies out as they were so tiny and DETERMINED to eat you they could crawl right thru most Clothing no matter how tightly woven. There is a shot you could get from your Doctor to help keep the swelling down from the black fly bites. Eat lot's of Fresh Garlic before and during your trip, this makes you smell less attractive to the mosquitoes. Buy some Avon Skin-So-Soft, just ask the rep and she'll know which one to get, it works great. Much less harsh than DEET. Late September should be fairly cool for temperatures so the flies and mosquitoes may not even be a problem except at night. Get some citronella candles for inside the Tent/Cabin/Camper to make it more pleasant to sleep. Good luck and post some pictures.:)

I lay my Thermacell on the platform part of my climbing stand. I have never had a deer, whitetail, wind me while using it. They work great, truly amazes me every time.

It says it takes about 15 min. to start working. This year while turkey hunting in the bottoms I turned it on and you could literally see the mosquitoes coming towards you and then turning. I just wish it would kill them. Only time it will not work is if its windy, but usually if its that windy the mosquitoes don't bother me.

I use Thermacells whenever I can. Even bought a couple of the Thermacell lanterns for the pool. Another tip, if you come up to your deer stand early season or while preparing for the season and it's got wasp nest in it. Open the door and toss in a Thermacell and all the wasp will leave.

Hope this helps, Wyatt

If you use a spray on repelant or even baby oil, apply it to something neer you bait every time you put out bait. Its a new oder, like yours that spook the critter. You can get them used to your sent too by leaving a shirt on the stand each day. Tee shirt swap works very well.

the skeeters here laugh at "Bug Tamers". i use to wear one until the Thermacell was invented. Thermacell has to be the best invention ever. our skeeters here in the swamps of Florida can stand flat footed and hump a turkey (the huge black one's with white stripes on their legs). i've had them bite through a "Bug Tamer" and you better hope a skeeter don't get trapped inside the "Bug Tamer" with you!

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with that little sound generating repellent device.

you mean this?

Spray Permanone on your clothing. Spray it on, let it dry. Anything lands on you it dies. Pretty simple.
