I'm thinking about installing one of these on a Chinese SKS that I'm refurbishing. I think the rifle was buried or stored in the salt air or something because it is the worst looking rifle I've ever seen. I got it on a gunbroker auction with a bad description and deceptive pictures so I'm trying to make the best out of the situation.

I figure that any collectibility is shot so now I just want to make it more functional and I don't feel bad about experimenting on drilling the receiver on a gun that was so far gone.

I aleady shortened the barrel to 16 1/2 inches and removed the considerable pitting from the barrel (the bore is perfect).

I'm posting a few options, I'd appreciate y'alls opinions and explanations of your poll choices.

If it's already hammered just do what you want with it. "sporterize" the snot out of it and have fun. Are SKS's (what is the plural of an SKS??) collectable anyway?

Some of them are quite collectible and worth quite a bit of money, some are comon as dirt and not worth that much.

The great thing about SKSs is that you can build a collection with 10 or 12 different varieties for less than the cost of a nice original colt SAA which would just be the beginning of someone else's collection.

I won't say which ones of the following I have, but some of the basic types are listed below. The ones in bold are extremely rare and worth several times as much as any others

-Russian
-Romanian
-Yugoslavian
..59/66
..59
-Albanian
-East German
-North Korean
-Vietnamese

-sino soviet
-Chinese varieties:
..threaded
..pinned
..paratrooper (16" barrel)
..M
..D
..cowboy companion
..hunter

I wouldn't bother.

But, if you do... don't forget the shell deflector. You wouldn't want your newly-mounted scope to get battered by the violently ejected cases, would you?

would go ahead and fix it however you want, I installed a scope mount on one that required drilling the receiver also once, at the time it was the only good way to mount a scope versus the railed cover that wasnt really solid.
it took some decent cobalt drill bits to drill the holes but it turned out good.

The cowboy companion has a siderail scope mount like the Russian and romanian AKs and no bayonet lug. Mine had a 16" threaded barrel.

The hunter has a different stock, 20" barrel and no bayonet lug. I've never owned one of them, but have handled an AK hunter, which is the same idea with a AK action instead of an SKS action.
