Mosin Sporter Build (DONE!!)

after a bunch of elbow grease polishing the barrel, ctting and crowning, turning the rear sight off, doing the scope mount and polishing the bolt and chamber(it is SLICK!!), now it was time to spend some $$ on the Finn

first was the trigger. I went with timney, the only other option being Huber concepts. I really didn't understand how the Huber was going to make a dramatic difference over polishing, I must be missing something, 100$ for just the actual trigger, I get that it's supposed to take away the trigger pin, but I just didn't feel confident with it.. either way, I felt like a dope spending 90$ on a trigger, but when you see the timney in person, you don't feel ripped off at all, it's some real quality stuff, and breaks awesome.

my only gripe is I couldn't find one with a stainless trigger, all good though, very happy with it.

I was torn on stocks, and was thinking I would be happiest with a wooden custom stock, but my wife cleared that up for me when she got me the archangel for Christmas. the stock is pretty impressive. super duper tight, I can't find play anywhere and the barrel is really free all the way to the lug.the cheek riser goes insanely high, you could put high rings and still get a proper weld. and I think with the scope over the receiver, the detachable mags are going to be a blessing.

has the bushnell 1-9x from my AR and a vanguard equalizer bi-pod(which is really nice, but way too tall for this application). also threw on a stainless brake last weekend.

I may weld the scope mount and reblue the receiver in the future, but for now, I'm just ready to shoot it. we have a date at the range on Tuesday with a variety of bullets.

Looks great! This is pretty much what I was planning on doing at some point, except I was going to maybe cerakote the receiver and barrel tan to match a tan archangel stock.

I pretty much put that project on the back burner for now though. I bought myself a decent M44 as a Christmas gift to myself instead.

I would shoot it with, and without, the brake to see if your accuracy is affected.
Don't know what kind you have, but some of these "slip-on" brakes are notorious for becoming projectiles, so be sure to check it frequently.

I may weld the scope mount

Don't know why you'd want to, as the ATI mount is known to be pretty solid- but you can't. The mount is 6061 T-6 aluminum, not steel. You can't weld it to the receiver. If the fit isn't perfect, remove it and skim bed it back in place.

The scope base is attached at only the front of the receiver and not to the side? I'm not saying that that is wrong. I'm just curious why not the side mount system as on the PE/PEM/PU?

Good luck on coyote busting.

thanks everyone, it as a nice gift and I love my wife. I am not planning to weld the mount to the receiver, but use silver solder on the front and weld the steel to build up the gap on the back of the mount. as for a side mount, I have never seen one for the nugget, the only other option is the scout, which doesn't flow right for me.

got out to shoot today. it performed....as expected I guess. I still haven't had time to work up any handloads so I am hoping to get some better groups out of it when I do. I had a problem with the bi-pod being ridiculously high, had a really tough time getting comfortable shooting prone. the timney trigger was nothing short of amazing, so can't blame that

25yards after sighting in, somewhat.

50 yards

75 yards was my best for some reason, prob just a fluke. the top bullet was just a sight in, but that little group is actually 5 bullets. I didn't believe it myself

off to 100 yards. first was still using the surplus

bottom right

then went to barnual, repackaged as monarch 185gr. I had high hopes for it. but the surplus did a little better, with a lot less kick

middle

I need a lot more testing, and some on a bench with bags before giving up on the monarch, but hoping the right diameter 7.7 bullets will yield under 2"
but happy nonetheless

the magazine was really nice to have and worked way better than the stock congifuration

I haven't been totally happy with the Barnaul/Monarch. But for the price, I can't complain. I've had real good luck with Wolf Polyformance, sold in the generic white box (bought at Gander Mountain).

Last night when I broke it down for cleaning, i noticed my scope base wasnt just kinda loose, it was teetering about 1/8 of an inch on the receiver. I know it was like that when I started shooting, so I have no clue when the recoil loosened it up, so I need to start over from scratch. I haven't investigated why it happened yet, I have three screws all with perm loktite, but hopefully it started loose right before the 100yards.
Could have been during transport though.

Hello,

There's the Smith-Sights trigger, too! ;)

147 grain surplus is generally 3-4moa capable. You'll see much better results when you work up handloads. I'd recommend using 174grn SMKs and H4350 with Hodgdon data.

Regards,

Josh
