Mosin-Nagant

Well, after having watched Enemy at the Gates, I have decided that I can not be without a Mosin-Nagant rifle. I am looking for something with decent furniture that I can use to play around with on the 100 - 200 meter range. I would like it to be scoped. If you know of any spots where I can get something in this configuration at an affordable price please let me know. Also - if these aren't available with the intended scopes - what scope do you suggest, and from where?

I just NEEEED one REALLY BADLY!!!! :D

Thought I would also mention I would prefer one of the 1891/30 models instead of a carbine. I would like the longer barrel.

There are some Finnish pieces with Russian scopes already mounted floating around for around $400 wholesale. Take a look in Shotgun News. There are several jobbers who currently have these.

TomG,
I saw the movie and had to have one myself! although I got the Russian M-44 because I saw them at AIM for only $69.00 arsenal refinished in the "mummy wrap" and heard they were in excellent condition...I saw it about a week ago when I was filling out the paperwork and it looks beautiful! from what i've read the longer barrel softens the blow of the 7.62x54 round...the carbine I hear can be a bit punishing but i'm going to get an after market recoil pad and that should help...good luck on your search,
Tony.

Well, I got one of the AIM M-44 Nagants in the wrap and I can say that she's a beautiful rifle and is fairly accurate as well. Only catch is that while she's dead on with the bayonet extended, it shoots about 5 inches left if it's folded. Shoots better extended anyways so that's the way I shoot her. All-in-all, for $81.95, it was an EXCELLENT deal! :D

Now if you want a real 91/30 PU sniper, I got one from American Munitions for about $550 here a little while back. Matter of fact, I used her to drop my buck a couple weeks ago. Mine was a 1944 Izzy and was in mint condition. All matching numbers except for the scope and she doesn't shoot half bad either considering the crude scope and Czech surplus ball ammo. My next project will be to reload her with some of the Sierra 174 grain BTHP bullets and see how well she can shoot with much better quality ammo. Yeah, real snipers aren't cheap but then again, what does a new rifle without any history or soul behind it cost? Not too much more and that 91/30 has a history of several decades, not several weeks of history in her. ;)

Thanks guys! I will definitely be saving my peenies up to grab hold of one of these rifles. They are a TAD more than I expected, but in my eyes definitely worth the extra. Now I just have to see who has them in good condition without breaking the bank too badly.

What is it that would cause accuracy to improve if the bayonet is extended rather than folded? I have read this several times. I have not yet fired my M44 but in looking at it, I can find no mechanical reason why this would be so. Somebody please educate me.

The Russians intentionally made it this way (folded bayonet off-sets the front sight slightly) so the troops would be forced to fight with the bayonets extended. Then they were easier to coax into a suicide bayonet charge by the officers since the bayonet was already set-up.

Well, its a theory anyway ;)

Desperately waiting for my C&R so I can play WW1 and WW2 soldier like everybody else. LAter.

Nice theory Jason :) but the front sight is an entity separate from the bayonet and does not come into the line of sight when extended (I'll look at mine when I get home to make sure.) The position of the bayonet ring when extended and slipped over muzzle would have to exert enough pressure on the barrel to affect point of aim (or is it point of impact... I always get them confused) and I just don't see that as being the case. But what do I know? :D

I've got a few M-44s. They shoot just fine at 250-300 yrds after you get used to them. Find some Czech or Hungarian 7.62X54R to feed them.

If you're looking for best accuracy from your MN, then try getting a Finn,
preferably the M-39 or 28/30. The former is way cheaper and uses the .311
bullet diameter typical of East Bloc surplus..

Also Simho Haya (sp?) made more kills with his unscoped 28/30 than
Vassily Zaitsev did with his 91/30 PU sniper.

The rifle was made to be shot with the bayonet extended. I took it off and it shoots about 5" ro the right. I'm going to put it back on and see if it mkes a difference. I am more than half way through a tin of ammo that is probably 50 yrs old. No misfires yet.

I wear a Past shoulder pad when firing this gun.

It is NOT uncommon for any rifle to shoot to a different point of aim with a bayonet ethier attached or extended. This affects the barrels harmonics, it changes the way a barrel vibrates.

I suspect the effect would be more pronounced on the long barrelled version that on the carbine.

My SKS shoots to a different point of aim as does the 7.7 Jap Arisaka and the M1 rifle.

In reality, if you were closing in on the enemy and decided on fixing bayonets, you were usually close enough that the change of impact was a moot point.

American Munitions contact information

PUMC_TomG pm'd me with questions about how to contact American Munitions about his 91/30 sniper rifles. Well, for everybody's benefit, here's the address and phone number:

American Munitions
P.O. box 1966
Royal Oak, MI 48068-1966

(248) 543-1324

He's sort of a mom-and-pop type operation so he's slow to get things shipped out and his hours are 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM for most inquires. Granted the waiting for him to get it here was a pain in the butt but the wait was well worth it in the long run! :D

Thanks alot for the contact info! I'm sure that at least one other person does too.

(Except keepin the source hush hush won't exactly keep cost low now will it? ;) )

Oh well....:)

Thanks again
