Mosin-Nagant M44 supply?

Does anybody know "the straight dope" on the recent lack of fresh Mosin-Nagant M44s from the importers? It seems like the only ones the online milsurp suppliers have right now are the bottom of the barrel condition-wise.

Are more coming, or what?

I'm just wondering what everyone's heard.

Two weekends ago, a pair of M44s showed up at our local Gander Mountain. One was fair-to-good, the other good-to-very good. I went back the next day and they both were gone.

I was told they're trickling in like that everywhere.

Just about everything seems to be gone or in short supply at the online suppliers I normally use. I'd check SOG, but their website is being updated so I can't.

Our local Gander Mountain had some in for $99 with a bunch of accessories in December. I didn't buy and they were gone when I went back in a few days for something else.

I noticed the gunshow here in January had very few as well. Usually they have crates of them, but I only found two vendors each with just a couple. I snagged one in good condition for $88, plus processing and tax.

Haven't seen any around since, but I haven't been looking anymore, either. I may try to get one of the longer 91/30's sometime.

Well last year the 44's were selling well but not hot, I don't think. If they are gone now, I would advise the guy looking to buy a full length rifle, to not d**k around about it. They could dry up sooner than you think, you know now. I would do it while there are still rows of them for sale at the shops and shows, so you can cherry pick, versus have a choice of two or something, later. When the supply dries up on the surps, often there is little warning. Well sometimes the importers say "this is the last lot" but they also lie sometimes.

One thing I know is that the Russians had one helluva big army, and millions of those rifles were made. I don't know how many they still have, or how many they will sell, or how many our new socialist regime will allow to be imported, but overall, there shouldn't be any shortage for a long time.
