Mosin Nagant for ACCURACY(it can happen)

most of you guys are probably familiar with my newest addition. the Finn M91 mosin nagant that got pretty much totally redone. I was a little disappointed with my first outing, I chalkd it up to the scope mount and sub-par minutions. made it out again today and had a blast with handloads. here is my old taret from a couple weeks ago, with shots ranging form 50 to 100 yards.

the middle of target is 185r barnual, little disappointing

went back out today with a nice tight scope mount and a work up using 4064 and the hornaday 174gr 303/7.7 FMJ
100 yards
hard to see the target, but its out there

here's the results, from left to right are working up from 42.5gr up to 46.5
middle holes are just sight ins

the barnual 185gr is in the middle, again, poor results, so I gues it wasn't the scope, just not right for my gun

overall I am EXTREMELELY pleasd for a rifle that used to shoot 4-5" stock. I am loving it.

thanks for everyone for watching it's progress.

that's 1 and 1/4 MOA baby

The only ones I have shot all came out of the same cases from the same dealer. He says they were sniper models. They have the mount but not the scope. None of them were counter bored. The bores on all of them we cleaned up looked great. We shot a few of them with modern optics and trigger work. All of them were Sub MOA with high dollar ammo. I think the Mosin is an accurate rifle. The problem is that most of the specimens we have of it in the USA today saw their prime about 10,000 rounds ago.

I have a 91/30 that is dead on....

I have a 1940 Tula M91/30 Mosin and after dropping in a timney trigger, a Monte Carlo Stock and a 7 power scope on her I can hit 2" groups @ 100 yards all day long, I can get 3" Groups out to 200 yards, not bad for a 75 year old battle rifle.

since we are all friends here.......right?

I can share with you the bad(stupid) part of my session today.

so my buddy had his AR today, I gave him a jar of 100 traceres. we found a large mud pit(about 50x50yrds) to shoot them into. all was going pretty good. we are on public land and ATV'er come through every now and again. a guy in his early 20's rolls up and asked what we are shooting, he looked very impressed with our guns and I asked him if he was a shooter? heck yeah I am!! I offered him to shoot the 300 BLK pistol, he fell in love. then my buddy offered up the AR, after explaining to him that it has tracer rounds and to keep it in the mud-pit. well he just points the gun at a tin can about 10 yards away and starts blasting it......low and behold, a tracer bounces up and into the brush. holy cow was this fire fast. after we lost total control of the fire, losing two 24pks of soda I brought to shoot and 3 gallon jugs of water, we just gave up. we were extremely lucky that th dirt path surrounded the brush area. we just had to keep an eye to stomp out any embers that tried to cross the path. the path was roughly 75yards long and 20 yards wide.....big ole fire

thank god it didn't go up to the brush that went to tree line, woulda been a news story

learn from my mistakes please.....tracers are for the desert or nice snow days

As much as I would like to put the blame on that kid, I don't think he knew what I was talking about when I said tracer rounds. Afterwards he stated "what the he'll kinda zombie bullets you got in that thing". The blame is all mine for not understanding the ignorance of people that claim they are big "shooters". But I shan't have been using tracers on a dry day anyways. Lesson learned, thank God it wasn't worse. In the end it was still an awesome day and so happy my gun is shooting well

Dang. Live and learn.

I actually just had a dream last night about Finnish Mosins! I think I need to go hit up Gun Broker now...

Yeah, when you do, things get burned up.

Reminds me of the guy here in town who took a customer down to his indoor range in his basement to shoot an UZI. The ceiling to the indoor range was the floor to his store. His store, with people in it, ended up with about 25 of the 30 rounds in the mag tearing through the store.

I try to make friends with the locals there since I can't get to my shooting spot without going through their private property. If it makes you feel better, I started him on the .38 lever action and he seemed to know what he was doing. Wasn't his fault, I shouldve explained it better

Nice groups! Great job on the project!

(I hope the brass I sent you is to your liking? :D)

Best I've got out of my Mosin was 1.5" 4 shot group at 75 yards from the bench with Winchester Soft Points.

I'm sure I can make it work somehow. Hopefully your gun will like these 185s better than mine. Iraqiveteran8888 told me that they were the most accurate for him, but the Finns seem to be a different story

C.O.L.

Skizzums, is there enough room in the magazine to let you alter the C.O.L., in the interest of tightening the groups, more? I don't find a lot wrong with 1.25 M.O.A., but was wondering if tinkering with C.O.L. might help. Some rifles respond to it, some don't.

the problem is the bullet is very short and stubby. I am going to be on the hunt for a 310-311 bullet with a longer profile. there is a huge jump from chamber to bore with these bullets. although I am pleased, I am sure I can do better with a better suited bullet. I think sierra has an offering that looks like a longer oal

heres a link to my reloading woes, this was the longest I could get them, but they are still waaayyy shorter than even 147gr surplus

Nice shooting with the Mosin. My 1939 Tula is a good shooter wit strong rifling and no counter bore.

As a young infantry Marine I saw a lot of fires started on combat ranges using tracers and luminary grenades. Hell white Phosphorous, smoke grenades and the list goes on for ways to start a brush fire. Glad you guys got it out and no one was hurt. You aren't the first and won't be the last.

Perhaps I am paranoid, but I don't want strangers to even touch my guns much less shoot them. It looks as if the OP was out in the sticks a ways....the smiling stranger could have killed the OP and taken whatever he wanted all w/o witnesses. I had a scary situation myself on public land that turned out ok in the end, but never again will I be on public land where other people whom I do not know are shooting.

That aside, the OP's rifle does well. These old warhorses can be excellent shooters. These rifles are underestimated and scorned by some folks because they are not expensive.....yet

After I talk with a guy for ten minutes or so, he is no longer a total stranger. He was a nice kid and I guess I am naive, but I don't walk around fearful that everyone wants to kill me. Maybe that'll bite me someday, but just not how I live or see other people. Especially when on their property ans they are nice enough to let is through. All good, I'm a trusting guy and I make a lot of good friends by being that way. Despite what the news says, 99.9999% of the country are still decent people

did you know when you go to a gun range, you are surrounded by strangers with guns? how do you know they won't just shoot you? is it any different? have you never talked to a guy interested in one of you guns at the range and let him take a couple shots to try it out? that's common place around here, maybe it's not where you are.
