Mosin Nagant 91/30 Sniper

I acquired a true Nagant Sniper (not one of those fake, put together ones you find all over the place) through a buddy of mine who at first was convinced it was a reproduction. During his research of the rifle, he proceeded to remove the PU scope from it's mount.

I understand that the scope sits off the centerline of the bore. I'm pretty sure the scope at one point was properly aligned and calibrated, but since it was removed, it is no longer. How can I correctly mount the scope to eliminate cant error? What I did was level the rifle, then level the horizontal of the scope - but this has to be incorrect. If the scope sits 1/4" or so off the centerline, windage corrections will be necessary for extending ranges. Historically, the rifle was to be shot canted (in relation to the iron sights), so that the vertical of the scope was directly over the centerline of the bore.

How can I adjust the scope over the centerline of the barrel when the mount is offset?

I recommend that the scope be zeroed to shoot with the POI difference being equal to the same distance horizontally as the scope is from the bore. At big bore distances it is not a problem and the issue of "cross over" won't exist. ie. In theory the POI should be parallel to POA to the practical range of the rifle. I would sight in the rifle at the longest possible range.

This will work but the rifle will then consistently shoot 1/4" to the right. Not precise for sniping work.
