Morgue Monster

Welcome to the TFL. In using a firearm for defense, the purpose is to stop someone, not necessarily to kill that person so the reference to "Morgue Monster" is inappropriate, IMO. In addition, the term "stopping power" is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to handguns. It seems to evoke images of people flying backward when hit by a bullet. That's simply not the truth. As you correctly note, placement is extremely important. My abbreviated views on the matter are contained within my sig line:
Jim's Rules of Carry: 1. Any gun is better than no gun. 2. A gun that is reliable is better than a gun that is not. 3. A hole in the right place is better than a hole in the wrong place. 4. A bigger hole is a better hole.
Penetration and hole size (not necessarily caliber) are key concerns in addition to shot placement.

There is a saying I agree with,,,

Stopping power is a myth,,,
Shot placement is everything.

Fairly contentious topic for your first post my friend,,,
But in general I agree with your assessment.

So does this trauma surgeon,,,

I tend to carry small caliber guns,,,
My current Pistolet de la journée is a .22,,,
On many occasions I'm carrying a smallish .25 ACP semi-auto.

So I modify my point of aim from center mass to clavicle.

My friends chuckle when we practice with human silhouette targets,,,
Their targets all have holes cut out of the center mass area,,,
Mine have the holes punching around the throat area.

The less powerful rounds will do plenty of soft tissue damage,,,
My FMJ rounds could possibly penetrate to the spinal cord,,,
At the very least my assailant will be choking badly.

So, after years of reading and talking to knowledgeable people,,,
I've came to the conclusion since I shoot the smaller guns,,,
I had better practice so I will be a good shot with them,,,
And I had better aim for a place I can do damage to.

Realize though,,,
There is no definitive answer to your supposition,,,
There are several camps on this topic and they all make good sense.
