RKBA Defenders,
I have previously forwarded messages concerning this situation to many
lists, and have in turn asked that they be forwarded to other relevant
lists and newgroups.
The feedback has been that the restrictions are limited to one or more
Tampa-area stores, but others have commented that even this limited
bowing to MMM/VPC/HCI pressure sets a dangerous precedent, as it is not
based on any real threat of danger. Some have relayed comments from
WalMart representatives saying that they will continue catalog sales of
guns, but still others have said that, in reality, there are no gun
catalog sales.
KMart has quit carrying many guns, as has Sports Authority. Many local
small gun shops, who could not compete with the larger chain stores, had
to close when they moved into town. What good is a right if you cannot
exercise it?
I myself spoke to a 'Sandy' [I have heard many names of those answering
the phones, no two alike] who was very polite. She confirmed that they
are indeed conducting a numbers count of pro/con and it is important
that we participate in this counteraction.
This sort of activism has had effect, despite the best efforts of the
well-funded Networks and the anti-RKBA crowd. Citibank backtracked,
KMart fired Rosie, S&W is sucking wind and sales of PAX-backing Levi's
are suffering. It is people like you that are inflicting pain on the
bad guys. Keep up the pressure. Please be polite and vote yes for guns
and ammo.
One gentleman has asked that I forward his letter to WalMart to the
listservs, as I understand it is already making the rounds on
newsgroups.
In Liberty,

To my good neighbors at Wal-Mart,
I wanted to write to Wal-Mart and express my concerns about talk I'm
hearing lately that Wal-Mart may discontinue selling guns and related
merchandise at its stores.
As a regular - and regularly satisfied - custmer of Wal-Mart, I enjoy
your stores and appreciate your prices, service and selection. But if
Wal-Mart does indeed bow to the emotionally-based demands of those
opposed to Americans' right of self-defense, you can rest assured that
I will never again set foot in a Wal-Mart store, nor will I allow a
family member to do so.
I - and hundreds of thousands or millions of other law-abiding,
repsonsible Amercian gun owners - will gladly pay 25% or even more
above the Wal-Mart price if it means not supporting an establishment
which would oppose our rights. We would look at it as just another
price we must pay for our essential, hard-won freedoms.
Self-defense is the most fundamental of civil rights. Without that
right, all other rights are meaningless. We each have an inherent right
to our own lives, so naturally it follows that we have an inherent
right to defend our right to live. And with the sad reality of human
nature and history being what it is, guns will always have a place in
the defense of person and State.
And those who forget or deny history or human nature do so at great
peril. The fact is, gun control is and always has been a means by which
tyrants control the whole people, not the criminals.
"That can't happen here" has such a hollow ring, especially when you
consider that it already has. Native Americans have been disarmed,
rounded up and slaughtered and put on reservations, which generations
ago were little more than glorified concentration camps.
Gun control has its roots in racism and government tyranny. In the
American past, most of the early gun control laws were directed at
minorities to keep them from "rising up". Sadly, this also prevented
them from defending themselves from lynch mobs and attacking government
officials such as police officers and soliders. That was, sadly, also
part of the plan of oppression.
In the middle of the twentieth century, our own government rounded up
American citizens of Japanese ancestry and placed them in concentration
camps, depriving them of their homes, property, and all other rights.
This was done simply because of their ethnicity. There are plenty of
Japanese-Americans still alive today who remember being in the camps.
As blacks began their struggle for equal rights, our own American
States prevented blacks from legally arming themselves against those in
and out of government who wished to oppress and kill them. There are
plenty of blacks still around today who remember the Klan, the attack
dogs, the police, and others oppressing and killing their friends and
family. All because they weren't allowed to defend themselves.
Having the option to own and bear arms is also a critical necessity for
women to defend themselves. Predators will think twice if he feels that
a woman may be ready, willing, and able to defend herself.
I would direct your attention to fine organizations such as "Arming
Women Against Rape and Endangerment" (www.aware.org), "Women Against
Gun Control" (www.wacg.com), "Mothers Arms" (www.mothersarms.org), and
"Second Amendment Sisters" (www.sas-aim.org). They and many other groups
have excellent resources to help a woman be aware, safe, and in control
of her self-defense and the defense of her children.
Despite all the best wishes of idealists and liberals, human nature
will simply never change by any act of man on earth. There will always
be those among us who are perfectly willing to oppress, steal, and kill
to get what they want. And if they have all the power and all the guns,
then they can get their way. And as long as that is the case, then
people will need to be able to defend themselves in whatever way they
see fit.
In addition to the right of self-defense, firearms are important and
valuable to millions of Americans who enjoy shooting sports, hunting,
and collecting. Responsible participation in all of these pursuits is a
perfectly honorable part of our heritage worthy of preserving and
teaching to our young. Guns are not sinister or evil.
Here are some quotes to ponder:
"We cannot but pity the boy who has never fired a gun; he is no more
humane, while his education has been sadly neglected."
- Henry David Thoreau, from "The Quotable Hunter" from the Lyons Press
"A sword is never a killer, it's a tool in the killer's hands"
-Lucius Annaeus, Seneca "the younger", circa (4 BC - 65 AD)
If Wal-Mart does indeed give in to anti-firearms pressure and
discontinue selling firearms and related items in its stores, rest
assured that the word will spread quickly via the Internet and there
will be a considerable and firm boycott of Wal-Mart and all its related
businesses.
For proof of this, I would invite you to conduct some quick searches at
Web sites such as www.keepandbeararms.com, www.gunowners.org, www.jpfo.org, and www.saf.org to learn about boycotts and other action
against such companies as Blockbuster, Starbucks, Citibank, Smith &
Wesson, Sara Lee, Hallmark, UPS, Levi Strauss, Geico, and many, many
others. Many of these bocyotts have resulted in reversals of company
policies.
Often companies simply don't realize that there are as many as 80
million gun owners in America. And they're not all in the NRA,
obviously, which only has a membership of about 3.5 million. There are
large numbers of State and national gun rights groups all across the
nation who are increasingly networking their information to defend our
common rights.
I think the best way for Wal-Mart to settle any gun-related merchandise
controversy is to take the affirmative decision - and announce publicly
- that it will continue to sell firearms and related items to eligible,
law-abiding citizens and that it will publicly support the right of law-
abiding citizens to self-defense.
Believe me - if Wal-Mart takes such an affirmative stand, the word will
spread very quickly, far and wide, and you will see the effects in your
bottom line.
However Wal-Mart decides, the word will spread. I hope to continue
enjoying Wal-Mart in the future. I look forward to your decision. Thank
you very much.
Respectfully submitted,
William E. Miller
