This is probably the most unscientific thing you've heard, bit in time, it works. I've bought a lot of lead bullets at gun shows over the years, and some were bad and some were good. When I found good hard bullets, I realized that I could'nt dig a sliver of lead of the edge of the bullet with my THUMBNAIL! When looking for 38 wadcutters or any bullet that travel under say 900fps, this was'nt an issue, but I soon developed a "feel" for a cast bullet that was hard enough to travel 13 -1400fps without excesive leading! True, you could always carry a Saeco hardness tester with you, but after some experience , you can develope you're own "feel" and test anytime. True, there are other variables such as lube and sizing quality, but this little test works!
