More Laws or Education Debate.

Holding a master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, I know what it is like to be the BG at a cocktail party because I know how to make a bomb (theory anyway) and of course I would use it on civilians...Blah, blah, blah. Now that I am pro-gun, they will probably cut my nose off and banish me.

Up to about a month ago, I was an "anti"- handguns only though- for reasons ingrained in my New England upbringing. Now that I have lived in the South and West, my outlook opened up a little, especially when I lived in New Orleans- all of the BG were well armed: some of the Cops were BG's too. Anyway, I have been a convert, and have purchased a Walther P99 before they are all gone and S&W offers the only model. When I first saw the P99 in the display cabinet, I heard Elvis singing, "It's now or never..."
Now that I am more mindful of my rights and desires to own this one gun, I thought that the process of getting a gun was rather stringent, but I do think, like a learners permit, there should be a booklet with laws and procedures and a nationally standardized test, administered by the gun store, that would test the aptitude of the person buying the weapon relavant to not pointing at someone you do not want to kill, that kind of stuff. My opinion, hold the flames.

Searching through this site, I was quickly informed of all of the laws that already exist. I have heard the arguments of enforce the laws, not make new ones, but never understood the scope of all of the laws out there. I, admittedly, am the loser for not researching both sides of the issue before taking a stance, but I think that attitude is most prevalent today. Why doesn't the NRA or like sumarize the current laws and present them in a commercial or billboards. I.E. advertise that there is no Gunshow Loophole and that the two adults (not parents) who bought guns for the Littleton gang should be held liable for the murders- enforcing existing laws. I think the calls for new laws would decend, as the knowledge of enforcement apathy is gained.

What do you think?

You know, if you leased a billboard, you could probably cover it with maybe 2-3% of the existing firearms laws - if you used about a 3 point font.

They don't summarize them, because you can't. There are - literally - tons of federal firearms laws, plus each state has laws, plus each county/parish has laws, and every city/municipality has laws... No one even knows how many there are and they change with every political line you cross. the 20,000-30,000 laws you hear are only guesses. How could any national org. keep up with that?

hube1236, there's another reason that the NRA doesn't advertise this: many, if not most, major media outlets will not accept NRA advertising. Welcome to the shooting community, and welcome to the world of one-sided media bias.

hube1236, the Law (Constitution) is very simple. Every citizen has a constitutional guarantee that government will not "infringe" on the Right to "keep and bear arms". Any law contrary to the Constitution is null and void and no court or citizen is obliged to obey it. The Constitution cannot be changed legally by legislation, it can be changed only by ratification.

AllanHampton, what you say is true in theory but the reality of the matter is that if you carry a firearm where you're not suppose to (i.e., in public without a CHL or in a restricted area -- such as a school, courthouse, etc.) and you are discovered, you will be arrested, fined, mostlikely jailed and barred from owning guns in the future. Unless you have almost a limitless supply of money for lawyers to fight this all the way to the top, or you have a couple of million people joining you, you will not win this battle under current conditions -- trying buying a gun from a dealer when the national background check comes back with a "No" for an answer.

I'm NOT saying that I agree with this, but it's the sad state of things.

To prove my point, according to the constitution, the national background check is an illegal law and should not be obeyed but the reality of the matter is that it IS being obey by a couple of million of handgun buyers every year.

Major changes need to be made first in public opinion and then in our laws for things to be different (better).

Sorry for the double tap but getting back to hube1236 original point ... I think that it is a good idea! While it would be impossible to list all of the last with regard to firearms. As Danger Dave pointed out, even with a billboard using small fonts, you would be able to include only a very small percentage.

However, it would be possible to SUMMARIZE the major ones and point out how most of these shootings would not have happened if existing laws were already enforced (the shooting at a school should never have happen because guns are barred from school grounds -- if that law is now enforced, then how are MORE laws going to be enforced?)!

Maybe each NRA member could buy a couple of copies to pass along to a library, a news organization, etc.; so the uneducated public could see that we have too many laws on the books and we would be fine if the current laws were enforced.

FUD, I believe the Constitution is not theory but the Law, the supreme Law of this Republic. I agree we can be arrested for anything or nothing and are in fact, but that does not make it legal. For instance if you were a juror how would you vote, to convict or acquit, on proof positive of another citizen charged with possession? No action just possession. LOL, I am serious and the question deserves some thought, serious thought because we have approximately 800,000 citizens in jail for mere possession. You or I may be next if we don't get the elected, who enact these unconstitutional laws, out of office and such laws repealed.

hube1236,

Welcome to TFL, and welcome to our proud bastion of pro-gun logic.

Please invite your friends to join, to learn, and to make a stand with us.

We are an active bunch. Some of us sponsor poorer members into the NRA or GOA (and other organizations). We also boycott and protest against organizations that threaten our rights. And we also regularly haunt our elected officials to remind them that they signed up to defend our Constitution, not their careers.

I'm proud to participate in these activities, and encourage you to as well.
