Holding a master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, I know what it is like to be the BG at a cocktail party because I know how to make a bomb (theory anyway) and of course I would use it on civilians...Blah, blah, blah. Now that I am pro-gun, they will probably cut my nose off and banish me.
Up to about a month ago, I was an "anti"- handguns only though- for reasons ingrained in my New England upbringing. Now that I have lived in the South and West, my outlook opened up a little, especially when I lived in New Orleans- all of the BG were well armed: some of the Cops were BG's too. Anyway, I have been a convert, and have purchased a Walther P99 before they are all gone and S&W offers the only model. When I first saw the P99 in the display cabinet, I heard Elvis singing, "It's now or never..."
Now that I am more mindful of my rights and desires to own this one gun, I thought that the process of getting a gun was rather stringent, but I do think, like a learners permit, there should be a booklet with laws and procedures and a nationally standardized test, administered by the gun store, that would test the aptitude of the person buying the weapon relavant to not pointing at someone you do not want to kill, that kind of stuff. My opinion, hold the flames.
Searching through this site, I was quickly informed of all of the laws that already exist. I have heard the arguments of enforce the laws, not make new ones, but never understood the scope of all of the laws out there. I, admittedly, am the loser for not researching both sides of the issue before taking a stance, but I think that attitude is most prevalent today. Why doesn't the NRA or like sumarize the current laws and present them in a commercial or billboards. I.E. advertise that there is no Gunshow Loophole and that the two adults (not parents) who bought guns for the Littleton gang should be held liable for the murders- enforcing existing laws. I think the calls for new laws would decend, as the knowledge of enforcement apathy is gained.
