More guns or more ammo?

I know, I know, one is not much good without the other. This is a toughie for me. This year I have purchased four new handguns (very productive year - I only have six total). Every time I got ready to buy one, I thought "You know, I could probably keep myself in clover with lots of ammo, or even a reloader if I forego this gun", but when the decision is to be made, I always go with the gun. I guess I feel like a gun is something permanent, unlike ammo which is going to be used and then gone. In the final analysis, I find myself thinking that I would rather have a variety of guns and only shoot them occasionally (about every three to four weeks) and just one or two and shoot them every week. Anyone else struggle with this dilemma? What did you decide?

Here is the pattern that I experienced.
1) After becoming interested in handguns I bought a bunch of different ones.
2) I was fortunate enough to have enough funds to begin reloading simultaneously.
3) Bought a bunch of guns, a bunch of different calibers, took em all apart and played with em.
4) Spent some time thinking about what really matters in a gun.
5) Shot glock matches
6) Shot IDPA. Discovered what works.
7) Now it seems I shoot a 1911 every time I go to the range. They just work for me. I used to think the 1911 guys were a bit eliteist. Now I think they're on to something.
8) From where I sit today, I will get rid of a number of guns that don't work for me anymore - and get some really good 1911's

The lesson is that you want to try out as much as possible. The only way to find out what you like is to shoot a lot. Competition and conversations with fellow shooters help a lot. I recommend IDPA to shake out the fluff from what really matters.

You'll find your own path on this, but you may be able to learn from my experience and home in on what works for you faster by shooting some matches.

Forgo a gun, get a reloader and shoot a lot. Then you'll know what works and what doesn't.

rock_jock,

A few years ago I was in the same dilemma. Many wants/needs and not enough cash to cover them.

Here's the sequence I went through.

A) Bought a few guns. Shot when I could afford ammo.

2) Bought a reloader. Got to shoot more often.

3) Saved up to buy more guns. Bought an NRA Life Membership instead.

4) Changed jobs. More $$$

Still can't afford all I want, but my needs are covered. Sorta amazing how a persons wants/needs expand to fit the paycheck.

Go NRA

Get some reloading gear and then report back to us ;) Really, it's such a wise move...and that will be obvious once you buy it.
