More chrono results for Buffalo Bore .38 spl +P

Just go back from the range and publishing my results testing Buffalo Bore .38 special +P out of my LCR's.

So I had hope to gain a little more out of the 3" barrel, but didn't get as much as I had hoped for. My initial results a while back were 1027 fps out a 1 7/8" LCR (.357 model) with a earlier load of BB .38 spl Outdoorman, 158 grain HC.

I got 1076 and 1087 fps out of the 3" LCRX. That's only a gain of 50 fps, but ends up in the 400 foot pounds range ME, so it at least will work as my woodsgun. Still not too shabby for .38 special.

Yes, I could have shot a five to ten shot string, but have found that BB is very consistent in their loads and these two are pretty right on what I would get shooting more. And at 1.25 a round, I'm happy shooting a few and calling it a day.

clip of recoil shooing Buffalo Bore's heavy .357 out of LCR

A side view to shot the muzzle rise and recoil from shooting the Buffalo Bore .357 heavy 180 grain Keith HC from the 17 oz steel .357 magnum LCR with 1 7/8" barrel.

I chronographed the first two rounds, measured for crimp jump (none) and then filmed the second two for the recoil.

The gun was wearing the larger Hogue grips, and I was wearing cycling gloves.

Ha, I need to get the camera closer. I had it telephotoed in, but every time it was turned off, it went back to wide.

Ends up that I forgot the 9mm +P outdoorsman and brought a second box of the .357 by mistake, so was not able to test 9mm!

But the results for the .380 through a Ruger LCP:
Critcal defense ...................774 fps (disappointing!)
BB .380 +P 100 grain...........1041,1050,1040
Federal Hydroshock frangible....865,894,882,912

When I carried a Model 40 my load was my own using a 125 JHP and enough Unique to clock 1,100 FPS from the 2" barrel. Never gave me any problem and I didn't see any obvious pressure signs. Went 1,150 from a 4" Model 15.

Didn't post a video of this one on youtube, but out of the Ruger Security Six, 4" the .357 Buffalo Bore 180 grain Keith HC registered 1381 and 1403 with a ME of 743 foot pounds!;)

I ran 3 rounds of BB 38+p outdoorsman through my LCRx 3 inch over a chronograph this summer. Temps were about 95 degrees. Elevation about 4700 feet. Results were:
1101 fps
1097 fps
1094 fps

That's 422 foot pounds from a 38.

Amazing!

Well, a 158 grain at 1080 average in a 38 Special +P is a lot faster than a 9mm 148 grain bullet. It is close to the velocity of a 124 grain 9mm. (which is why I still have my doubts on a 9mm being a good round for self defense)
