More ammo! (CCW questions)

Currently, my primary carry weapon is a Taurus mod 85 38.spcl...loaded with 5 Winchester Personal Protection +P's. I carry a speedloader in my pocket with 5 of the same's in it.
I know..if I want lots of bullets I should go to an automatic ...but I'm thinking I might consider carrying at least 5 more rounds...maybe more when I go camping/hiking. I'd like to hear some opinions on carrying more ammo, how to carry it, where to carry it.
thanks.

Just back from school

At Blackwater Training Center...one-day practical pistol....

The one thing you'll notice quickly is that NO STUDENT has a wheelgun....with the exception of the paid professional pistoleros who do the "tour", you're just not going to be able to be as fast on speed or tactical reloads as with essentially any semi-auto...

On the other hand, a small wheelgun is easy to conceal, easy to get into action, etc.

That's the trade-off and frankly, were I you, I'd just go with what makes me feel comfortable and what I'm comfortable with...

Just my 2 cents worth

I feel very comfortable with my wheelgun, and my next purchase will be a slightly bigger wheelgun that will shoot .357 mag and hold 6. This will be my primary camping/hiking gun and I can leave the snubbie with the wife. I do see an auto in my future...not my immediate future though.

Straying a little bit...I see you're in Charlotte. How do you like that? I'm really considering moving, I am from coastal NC and love NC. Isn't it a CCW state?

Yes, we can CCW in NC. Back to the first question, nothing wrong with having at least two reloads for a snubbie. Have you tried speed strips? That way you can carry 10 extra and they are about as flat as a pack of gum. If you shoot right handed, try keeping your spares in your right pocket. Easier to access them since your left hand is holding the gun and dumping the cylinder. For outdoors carry try two speedloaders in a pouch, again on the right if you are right handed. Reverse it for lefties.

With a LOT of practice...
A wheelgunner can reload quite fast.

And wheelgun is faster to reload one handed if the need arises.

Unless you PLAN on getting into a gunfight, or you have a situation which strongly suggests that one is going to involve you (i.e., being stalked by a killer, or drug dealers) then your five-shot revolver with one reload should be enough.

After all, absent a compelling personal threat, the main reason to carry CCW to defend yourself and escape an immediate, unforeseen threat. If you can escape the immediate threat in the normal urban or suburban environment then you can most likely retreat to a safe place where you can re-load or re-arm yourself.

Going into the woods for campng or hiking I would plan on carrying a bit more since you are not in a place where you can acquire more ammo or another weapon in a hurry. How much depends upon how long you think you will be out. But I would probably double the amount I carry. MTM products makes (made?) a nice plastic wallet carry option for 18 rounds. Flat and compact you can store it easily.

FWIW:

There are also a few .357 revolvers out there that carry 7 or more rounds. Taurus and Smith & Wesson come to mind.

Can be reloaded very quickly w/ speed loaders, etc. as well. (Not to mention moon clips.)

Lock and load!

:) :D  ;)

All great posts....I carry a snubbie ALL OF THE TIME. When its my only gun...I carry a speedloader and 2 speedstrips...20 rnds total.
When its my BUG I just carry a speedloader.......Shoot well

Ditto on preference for speed strips. Made by Bianchi for .38/.357. Sometimes kinda hard to find in stores/shows. Internet seach words of "bianchi speed strip" would likely get ya some mail order sources.
