Montana Rifle Company Actions

What's the consensus on these. Was looking at one to someday build a rifle on... Seemed like a good design but upon some digging found some less than stellar reviews. But further digging indicated that when they started out the actions were meant to be finished up and worked over by a smith, and that perhaps some folk didn't realize that. Now the actions come good to go from the company...

So has anyone used one of these rifles or actions? What'd you think of it?

Also will it fit into a stock meant for a model 70? Was specifically looking at putting it into a manners stock.

It really depends on what your intended use is. These are not target rifle actions, they are for hunting rifles. Good actions, need very little work, they are essentially an improved Model 70 action. I have used them for 2 builds for customers, they work well.

Well it'd actually be for a heavy barreled target build. However I'm not looking to use it in competition or anything. I realize all the push feeds have an edge in accuracy... this is more of a if I only had one rifle type thing. As such I'd be happy with under moa accuracy... a good crf action is what I really want.

Think along the lines of the Vietnam era sniper rifles or their immediate successors like the M40a1

For a while Unertl was building a tactical rifle based on the Montana m99 action, guaranteed 0.5 MOA at 100 with match ammo.

So I would say that a "target rifle" is one of the possible applications. I wouldn't bother trying to compete with the benchrest crowd, but for High Power, Palma, or F-Class they are a fine option. Although there are cheaper actions out there for a target rifle, such as Savage, that will shoot just as tight for anything that does single load like Palma or F-Class.

They are basically a good blend of M98 reliability and M70 smoothness (and trigger design). Like anything else in the gun world, this is a set of compromises that gives you slower lock time than other actions, but more robust extraction (full length non-rotating claw extractor), and decent action rigidity.

It's all in the barrel. You can order a straight 30" 1.25" blank from them and you'll be as accurate as anything else.

They are very good actions and a quality product.

Stocks and scope mounts are the same as a 70 model so no sweat.

Not everyone is a fan of the 700 (including me) and Winchester does not sell actions. I'll give Montana a shot!
