You guys have done a great job!
GOA contacted you a couple of weeks ago in regard to the Republican
and Democratic candidates for the U.S. House. Both candidates had
not turned in their surveys at that time.
But as a result of your efforts, GOA is pleased to report that
Dennis Rehberg has returned his survey in favor of gun owners'
rights.
Nancy Keenan, on the other hand, has still refused to answer her
survey.
Keenan's non-response is very disturbing. It is very troubling when
a candidate who wants to represent the pro-gun state of Montana will
not return their GOA survey!
Keenan's refusal to answer leaves gun owners wondering whether she
is planning to support gun control if she gets to Washington. You
see, any politician who refuses to answer their GOA survey is
virtually always a gun rights compromiser, or even worse.
In fact, it's been reported by Charlie Cook, a well-respected
election analyst, that Nancy Keenan "would support the Brady Bill,
the Assault Weapons ban, as well as background checks at gun shows."
(Source: National Journal, January 3, 2000.)
Thankfully, Republican Dennis Rehberg has returned an almost perfect
survey. He has pledged to oppose mandatory testing, taxing and
registration of gun owners. He has promised to oppose bans on
firearms and ammunition.
However, Rehberg does support the instant background check, which
GOA has opposed because of the potential for registering gun owners.
To be sure, Rehberg is the only one of the major candidates to "come
clean" and honestly let gun owners know where he stands on 2nd
Amendment issues. Gun owners should ask his opponent, Nancy Keenan,
what it is she's hiding.
Should you wish to drop a thank you note to Dennis Rehberg, thank
him for his support of our constitutional guarantees. Urge him to
reconsider his position on the instant registration check. We have
already seen how the FBI, and some state agencies, has used
background checks to register gun owner information.
On the other hand, tell Nancy Keenan to become more responsive to
your gun rights. Ask her to send in her GOA survey!
