Mojo sights on guns with a front sight hood (Yugo Mauser)

I have a 24/47 I picked up and put a Mojo rear sight on because I wanted to be able to dial elevation a little more precisely. I left the front sight (narrow pyramid) in place. I like the "peep and post" sighting the best for irons, similar to the basic AR-15 style sights.

I like everything so far, but I noticed something that gave me a little pause. The hood over the front sight is very close to the top of the sight and can be seen just a little in the sight picture from the rear aperture. See this poorly drawn picture for reference, the gray crescent at the top is the top of the sight hood.

I also noticed that my groups (surplus ammo) are "ok", but spread is primarily vertical stringing. I'm wondering if the sight hood in the field of view is causing me to have trouble centering the post vertically. Has anyone experienced similar problems, or am I just imagining this to be a problem and need to get in some practice time? I have done quite a bit of thinking on it and can't figure out how to solve the problem without removing the front sight hood, which I would really want to keep to maintain the looks and because the post seems relatively fragile without it.

peep sight vertical stringing

I had the same problem when using a peep sight with a post front. The post would disapear into the bull. It was very difficult to get the bull sitting right on top of the front sight. I solved the problem by silver soldering a 16 penney nail on top of the military front sight, then cut it to the right length with a dremmel tool. With this bead I now get a very good sight picture, it is very easy to sit the bull on top of the bead. The vertical stringing disapeared. This was done on a 1908 Brazilian Mauser, on which I had mounted a reciever sight.

mojo

I have a mojo on my 98k, I havn't noticed what you speak of, my front hood is round (I have seen flat on top) and I put the mojo right inside with the inverted "v" centered. my groups went from 5-7" @ 1oo yards to 3-4" , I do wear glasses for astigmatism if that means anything. I only shoot handloads 175 grn, 180grn, & 200 grn @ 2600 , 2500, & 2300 respectivly. the lighter bullets shoot a little high(2-3") with the sight on the lowest setting, but the 200's are right in there when I do it right.

Similar issues here, my old eyes do not like these mid mounted rear sights. First I added a Mojo.

I still had a problem with seeing the front post so I put the rifle away for a few months. Then I found this at Mojo's site. It's a replacement for the front post. It's a aperture with changeable inserts for different sizes. This was the answer for my eyes.

I was lucky to get 4" groups with this 24/47 before the Mojo's, now I can shoot a 2" group with little trouble.

Hey, sorry about how bad the drawing is. It is supposed to represent the view through the peep sight. So the black circle is the rear peep sight and the triangle thing is the front sight, but the gray fuzz at top is the top of the front sight hood that I can see in the aperture sight picture and blocks my view somewhat.

It's funny you mentioned the bull disappearing, because I later realized that was also happening. I have had this happen on my AR as well, it seems like after a bit my eyes start to get a bit tired or something.

I saw those aperture sights on the website, and I was considering them. Though, I have heard a few reviews saying it is hard to go back and forth between those and post sights, so it made me kind of wary.

I'm sure it well vary with the individual shooter but I don't have any problem. My weekly range day is five or six rifles with scopes, assorted aperture sights. Enfields, K31's, Mausers, AR's.

I use a Lyman Hawkeye shooters aid on my shooting glasses, it does help with some guns more than others. I have type 2 Diabetes and my vision changes with my blood sugar levels:eek:
