Modifying PSL top cover

I am shooting a PSL/romak/SSG rifle and it is badly damaging the ejected ctg brass. Reloading greatly improves the accuracy of the rifle, remarkably!

But brass has become scarce and the rifle is steadily mashing my limited supply.

Has anyone modified the top cover of a PSL (basically a giant AK) to reduce the damage to ejected brass? I'm thinking of opening the ejection port by about 1/2 inch or so. Would this be a safety issue? I am not concerned w/ the lack of protection to the inners of the trigger action, it is not a combat rifle for me, etc.

I saw a photo of a PSL in a gun article that appeared to have a piece of tape or foam rubber attached to about where the ejected ctg strikes the top cover, but I suspect that was to avoid dings to the cover as opposed to saving brass.
